| DESIGN NAME: Snow White PRIMARY FUNCTION: Jewellery Collection INSPIRATION: Porcelain clay as a naturally formed material has over 1,000 years history. Floral theme inspired from nature also represents a timeless chic for ladies fashion. Applying porcelain into fashion jewellery isn't very common. Precisely, exploring the possibilities between these two gives the meaning of the design. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Snow White collection is not about diamonds or gem stones; it's about earth that has been dug from the ground. After a long journey of design, experimenting, handcrafting, high-temperature firing and assembling, it was finally shaped and refined into delicate porcelain jewellery. Collection is inspired from different seasonal flowers. They include Plum Blossom Cluster Necklace, Plum Blossom Ring, Snowdrop Tassel Earrings, Daisy Stud Earrings and Plum Blossom Statement Ring. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Necklace is made of 33 pieces of porcelain plum blossom flowers and gold-plated chains with lobster clasp opening. Both rings are designed as adjustable rings. Ring size is adjustable. Earrings are designed for pierced ears. Ear studs are in post back finish, while the drop earrings are in long hook finish. You can hear the clear and delicate porcelain sound when handling the jewellery. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in August 2016 in Kolding and finished in May 2017 in Copenhagen, Denmark. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Every piece of porcelain has experienced twice kiln firing (biscuit firing and glaze firing), for more than 15 hours, with temperatures reaching over 1200 degree Celsius. Making process also included sketching, crafting, cooling, polishing and assembling. The entire process is all handmade. Every piece is unique in shape and no two are exactly the same. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Necklace: Length 350mm+50mm extension. Simple Ring: Ring size is adjustable. 25mmW x 25mmD x 30mmH. Stud Earring: 20mmW x 20mmD x 17mmH. Drop Earring: 30mmW x 27mmD x 95mmH. Statement Ring: Ring size is adjustable; 33mmW x 33mmD x 32mmH. After different type of research and study, the cross border possibilities among fashion, jewellery and porcelain can be seen. Fashion trend research played a main role to direct the product modeling. The study on porcelain making, glazing and firing gave the key technical support for the whole project. CHALLENGE: Porcelain flower crafting was one of the most challenging and time-consuming parts of the design. This process requires close attention. Any careless handling could cause damage on the petals. Unlike re-welding silver or gold metal, (although clay can be recycled), the broken petals are very unlikely to bond together properly again once they got damaged.
