DESIGN NAME:
Shadow

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Wall Tiles

INSPIRATION:
The process of industrialization has accelerated urban development, meanwhile urban development has accelerated the replacement of industrial materials. More and more ceramic waste from defective tiles are discarded and dumped in landfill without proper diaposal, occupying farmland and polluting local ecological environment. Recycling wasted materials will be an action we make everyday, as well as an attitude toward life, and the abstinence against appetite and profligacy.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The Shadow wall tiles are made out of the cement which made it up was aggregated with ceramic that contributed to 50% of weight in the material, resulted in a brilliant efficency of recycling wasted materials. Learning from the principle of light and shadow imaging with incredible formability of cement, this design stayed in a planar form but presented different shades of shadow with grooves of different depths. The contrast between light and shade resulted in a visually three-dimensional effect that enhances the extensity and made the room impressive.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Wall tiles commonly seen often rely on color and wavy surface to serve for a decorative purpose but the Shadow wall tiles are uncommon. Learning from the principle of light and shadow imaging with incredible formability of cement, this design stayed in a planar form but presented different shades of shadow with grooves of different depths. The Shadow wall tiles actively challenge the perception, as they keep changing to astounding effect depending on the viewing angle.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in September 2016 and finished in January 2017, and was exhibited in The Red Dot Design Museum Essen in July 2017.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Building Materials, Construction Components, Structures & Systems Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The Shadow wall tiles had applied an integrated design and was moulded in a whole. The cement which made it up was aggregated with ceramic that contributed to 50% of weight in the material. Learning from the principle of light and shadow imaging with incredible formability of cement, The Shadow wall tiles present different shades of shadow with grooves of different depths. The contrast between light and shade results in a visually three-dimensional effect.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Ceramic industry is one of the most important industries nowadays. Despite the high cost, the amount of products keeps climbing due to the high yield. Many products can hardly meet the recent aesthetic need, resulting in a serious excess capacity of ceramic products as time passes by. The Shadow wall tiles perfectly implemented aspect of sustainability as we transfer those wasted ceramic products into pellets and mix them with cement. With grooves of different depths, the contrast between light and shade resulted in a visually three-dimensional effect, continuously providing amazing sense of freshness and dazzling visual impact.

CHALLENGE:
The most challenging part was supposed to be breaking through conventional thinking. By developing an innovative way of presenting a three-dimensional visual effect, which depends on changing light and viewpoint, The Shadow wall tiles are of great visual impression and satisfation. The cement which made it up was aggregated with ceramic that contributed to 50% of weight in the material, the Shadow wall tiles make full use of resources as well as reduces waste.

PROFILE:
Bentu is an independent design brand founded in 2011, engaged in innovative designing and combined designing with manufacturing. They're actually an exploration team and also a laboratory. they made products on their own to satisfy their necessary or extemporaneous needs, step by step from initial designing to final polishing. Through a series of experiments and exploration, they found the primeval feature of materials amazingly beautiful by revealing the original texture and temperament. What hides behind their attempt is their equal care for all - all the raw materials, techniques and cultures that make up things. There is no disparity between nobleness and lowliness, costliness and cheapness, neither treasures and trashes. Devoting ourselves into design could make the mud as priceless as the diamond. Even a straw or a handful of mud would shine when they find their uses. There is not the best but only the fittest thing for any purpose. they cherish everything they asked from the world. Bentu focuses on the R&D, design, production and sales and promotion of products which varies from lighting, home furnishing, outdoor furniture, wall decors and so on.
