DESIGN NAME: Shadow
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Wall Tiles
INSPIRATION: The process of industrialization has accelerated urban development, meanwhile urban development has accelerated the replacement of industrial materials. More and more ceramic waste from defective tiles are discarded and dumped in landfill without proper diaposal, occupying farmland and polluting local ecological environment. Recycling wasted materials will be an action we make everyday, as well as an attitude toward life, and the abstinence against appetite and profligacy.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Shadow wall tiles are made out of the cement which made it up was aggregated with ceramic that contributed to 50% of weight in the material, resulted in a brilliant efficency of recycling wasted materials. Learning from the principle of light and shadow imaging with incredible formability of cement, this design stayed in a planar form but presented different shades of shadow with grooves of different depths. The contrast between light and shade resulted in a visually three-dimensional effect that enhances the extensity and made the room impressive.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Wall tiles commonly seen often rely on color and wavy surface to serve for a decorative purpose but the Shadow wall tiles are uncommon. Learning from the principle of light and shadow imaging with incredible formability of cement, this design stayed in a planar form but presented different shades of shadow with grooves of different depths. The Shadow wall tiles actively challenge the perception, as they keep changing to astounding effect depending on the viewing angle.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in September 2016 and finished in January 2017, and was exhibited in The Red Dot Design Museum Essen in July 2017.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Ceramic industry is one of the most important industries nowadays. Despite the high cost, the amount of products keeps climbing due to the high yield. Many products can hardly meet the recent aesthetic need, resulting in a serious excess capacity of ceramic products as time passes by.
The Shadow wall tiles perfectly implemented aspect of sustainability as we transfer those wasted ceramic products into pellets and mix them with cement. With grooves of different depths, the contrast between light and shade resulted in a visually three-dimensional effect, continuously providing amazing sense of freshness and dazzling visual impact.
CHALLENGE: The most challenging part was supposed to be breaking through conventional thinking. By developing an innovative way of presenting a three-dimensional visual effect, which depends on changing light and viewpoint, The Shadow wall tiles are of great visual impression and satisfation. The cement which made it up was aggregated with ceramic that contributed to 50% of weight in the material, the Shadow wall tiles make full use of resources as well as reduces waste.
