DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Notch

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Tea Packaging

INSPIRATION:
The inspiration for Notch was the thought of having a product sold in a package that will make users want to display it at their own home, instead of making their kitchen look untidy if it is not being stowed away. A packaging that is tipping toward the users, inviting them to interact with it. The packaging design has been inspired by The Dieline Packaging, having worked on modifications to its faces, tabs and cutting lines to obtain the final design. The graphic design inspiration was focused on the japanese culture: cherry blossoms and minimalist lifestyle.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This is a simple box that optimizes the packing space for the product's distribution since it has a cube-like figure. But when it comes to be displayed, its triangular face at the bottom provides an interesting way of being demonstrated on a counter to the public, or further more, on the customer's kitchen. Its frontal window allows the consumer to observe the product, while its other faces offer enough space for branding.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
When placing the product with one of its square faces lying on a surface, the user will get a conventional box. But when using the triangular face to make the product stand, the user will get a more interesting display of the packaging. One of the plain square faces is a flip top that allows the product to be closed again after use.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
This design was originally made in April 2015 in Chihuahua, Mexico. It was modified in August 2017 in Chihuahua, Mexico.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
For the package, several prototypes were made until it was possible to make the cutting lines work together with the flaps in order to fold in a clean and precise way. The material used is light cardboard. For the graphic design Adobe Photoshop was used to give the metallic effect. Nevertheless, this effect could be obtained with several techniques such as metallic inks, metallic stamping, foil or serigraphy.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
100mm (width) x 100mm (depth) x 100mm (height) Angle of 45 degrees in triangular face

TAGS:
Tea, Packaging, Notch, Inclination, Angle, Minimalist

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
A research of japanese origami and box patterns was made in order to accomplish the final result of the packaging.

CHALLENGE:
The biggest challenge was to create something different from the conventional tea packages and making it functional.
