DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Four Treasures of the Study

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Product Design

INSPIRATION:
The four treasures of the study are able to transform all these artistic creations into elegant characters filled with sparkling gems and precious wisdom, bearing intense forces and strong sentiments that may last till forever.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Four Treasures of the Study - with simple and pure deliveries of writing, the messages and heritage at all times can always be extended and passed down: brush, ink, paper, and ink stone are the four indispensible mediums of tool for the refined scholars. They use these mediums for expressing diversified manners of interpretation and performance: writing in flying strokes, reciting poems, and singing willows.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Through the conversion of the four objects from antiquities to the modernizations, we create a possible convergent realm where our history is able to encounter the present day.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project finished in 2016 in Taiwan.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Multiple Structures - to interpret the implicit spirit of "writing brushes, ink sticks, papers and ink stones" in contemporary-designed vocabularies by harnessing principally cement and metals as the raw materials of the objects: we try to combine the cement foundation base as the soil of the land with the eternal property of metal materials, plus the assistance of digital technology for tracing the mortising and tenoning way of traditional components, so as to create a theme stationary set that possess diverse forms and recombination of break and join.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
As to devising an individual modeling for its cross-section parts, a conversion of simulating those horseback imaginaries appeared on traditional architecture is displayed by arranging the disposition of the four objects in different orders just as the inserts often seen on doors or windows, which ingeniously comprises interesting variations resembling a Chinese magic cube of a miniature siheyuan (courtyard house) or a danshenshou (a courtyard in L shape).

TAGS:
Product Design, Gift Items

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Object Interpretations - grafting the spirit of traditional objects onto the new form of technological media: as the time is always changing progressively, the demands for brush, ink, paper, and ink stone have decreased imperceptibly but significantly during the contemporary life due to the great leap forward of technology. Nevertheless, the enjoyment of the thunderstruck feeling brought by the characters and writings should not yet be forgotten as we still ought to crave for the tender and soft sentiments and emotions hiding inside between the words and lines.

CHALLENGE:
Through a rather modernistic transformation, the four objects of brush, ink, paper, and ink stone are converted into mediums that are adequate to modern-day usage. The idea is to transform the writing means of Chinese brush into fountain pens and light pens, the prepared Chinese ink which possesses outputting thoughts into mobile power banks, the preservation tool of Chinese art papers into file-sending flash drives, and finally the ink stones into business card bearing stands.
