| DESIGN NAME: Chess Drama PRIMARY FUNCTION: Three-dimensional Chinese chess INSPIRATION: Because of the single shape of the Chinese chess,less young people play chess than the old.This project aim to meet rising aesthetic needs of people, arousing interests of the young in this ancient puzzle game in a result of increasing the market share of the game. That means this unique Chinese culture is no longer confined to the group of middle and old aged people, but can also become a trend in the younger generation. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Chinese chess, a classic of ancient strategy game ,enjoys a long history in China. This project boldly try more interesting three-dimensional modeling by using 3D printing technology.After conducting quantities of researches, selecting drafts and adjusting models, the perfect model of xiangqi pieces are produced that could be materialized to fit the board of Chinese chess and the final structure reached the minimum of consumables.CHESS DRAMA focus on updating the views of public on traditional chess and in hope of highlighting the historical and cultural features of China. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: By taking advantage of using 3D printing technology for product design, CHESS DRAMA change the inherent impressions of the xiangqi(Chinese chess) in people's perception . PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in May and finished in July 2016 in Shanghai. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The Production of the chess pieces :3D Printing ,Polish and spray paint the surface molding material： Photopolymer resin ，white The Production of the chessboard :Acrylic laser cutting and CNC processing SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: King 30mmX30mmX108mm, Mandarins 30mmX30mmX95mm , Elephants 30mmX30mmX 85mm ,Knights 30mmX30mmX81mm, Cannons 30mmX30mmX71mm, Rooks 30mmX30mmX67mm, Pawns 30mmX30mmX47mm TAGS: Chese chess redesign RESEARCH ABSTRACT: In the early stage of process,the project investigate the historical evolution of Chinese chess and find that patterns on the back of the pieces of traditional Chinese chess are monotonous.After the panel discussion, mind mapping and early sketches, the direction of in-depth designing was is established . Basic framework of designed chess pieces is geometric blocks in the upper part supported by four thin column in the lower part. The inspiration comes from ancient symbols of chess pieces as for the whole style of chess pieces.For example, the idea of ‘Pawn’ came from the element of Chinese Battlement style and an ancient defensive architecture. it is like soldiers in the battlefield arranging in a defensive posture.This work turned out a success finally and integrated aesthetic pursuit, structure ,technology, marketing demand,cost control, etc. CHALLENGE: During the development，We want to distinguish the chess pieces from the Western chess and make it more oriental. Our challenges in the 3D printing process require constant adjustments. For example, the wings of black gauze cap on Mandarin ‘s head are too thin and fragile. We should change model and appropriately thicken the weak point.
