DESIGN NAME: LAYERS
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Footwear
INSPIRATION: The first step was to create the right raw material.Using different materials, I tried to create different surface areas, which have strong enough constitution to serve as raw material to be used as differen parts of shoes.I created my new technique based on traditional shoe creating techniques.Designing and creating the final products,my main objective was to make the shoes using my own techniqe and style using the machines available in the shoe factory, and to be able to showcase the different chances.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The idea for my collection was the need for the use of the still perfect quality residual leather remaining after the manufacturing of regular leather pieces.Retaining the technologies used in traditional shoe manufacturing,I have experimented a new construction method. The collection demonstrates the possibilities and directions of this new shaping process in the spirit of sustainability. Every shoe of my collection is created using another base method to showcase the different possibilities.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: When I designed these shoes, sustainability and the ZERO WASTE philosophy were my most important starting points. In additon to being able to reach 100% material usage with the production of this collection, the varying size of the used leather creates room for some playing with the technical details. Thus, while being the highest quality, each piece is slightly different from each other and can be customized for every person.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project (which was also my diploma collection at Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design) started in September 2016 in Budapest, Hungary and finished in June 2017.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: I worked on the broadening of the scope of possibilities, adding to the horizontal construction method that was used in the construction of leather shoe-shells, as it influences the design and surface image of the carved material greatly. As the layers were created one by one, utilizing the greater freedom obtained, the possibilities have widened: I diverged from the traditional way of construction as soon as the gluing process, and started to increase the workable surface area centrally. This had the advantage of being able to use raw materials regardless of shape and size, and to distort and increase the shape in the central direction.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The LAYERS collection consists of 5 pairs of shoes. All shoes are EUR 37/38.
Slippers / piece: 270mm x 125mm x 120mm
High heels shoes / piece: 255mm x 95mm x 200mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: My main purpose was to shape a collection and technology which could solve the occupated waste of leather's problem. First, I have searched for already exiting solutions. The importance of this process was that I didn't aim to design a recycled product, It has to easily fit the manufacturing process as an upcycled design accessories. Therefore, I took advantages of the leather’s characteristics to create shapes to fit the functions. In this way, the ultimate collection is a shoe collection which is wearable and can be manufactured.
CHALLENGE: During the design process, I had to face two challenges. First, to show the high quality of leather on a product that's construction is based on 100% material usage. The second biggest challenge was to achieve sustainability. Sustainability is even more significant in long-distance production plans than in a unique small series pieces. That's why I avoid using nonbiodegradable materials. The glue is the only material which is not biodegradable, so I used it in a small amount.
