DESIGN NAME: Dual Concepts
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Workspace Environment
INSPIRATION: The designer of this project is the founder of T.M Design Studio. Due to the long working hours, the designer wanted to combine his work and his home life together so that he was able to spend more time with his family. By combining the two functions, the designer is able to seamlessly switch between his working life and spending time his family. A lot of thought went into the design of this building to ensure that the functions were suited to both the studio and home.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The space was designed for the purpose of being the owner’s studio and home. The designer wanted to create a modern interior style that included the functions which meet his needs for now, but also wanted to keep the beautiful history and aged feel of the building. By refurbishing and repurposing the old building is not only a way to present sustainability but also to carry on producing memories and value of this old building.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: As the building is located on a corner, there is plenty of natural light. In order to bring as much of the light into the space, the designer expanded the original windows, which also makes the building look more modern. Due to the height of the rooms, the ceiling was not covered up and therefore the beams are still visible, but they blend in seamlessly and are in keeping with the style of the room. The building is located in a quiet residential area and was built over 60 years ago.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in March 2016 in Taichung City and finished in March 2017 in Taichung City.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: In the studio area there are the pine plywood surfaces, the concrete polished floor and also the staircase which have all become the main features here. There is also a red brick column which has tradition of the past. Then by using the white square tiles, powder coating metal as window frames and perforated metals on the walls, it adds some modern vibes into the space. In the living area, the big piece of glass expands the visual feeling of the space, making the room feel larger. The wood herringbone parquet floor has added the warm feeling into this bedroom.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Multipurpose has become a trend in many aspects nowadays. The new word 'homffice' has been created also stating this fact. Combining different spatial forms help to shorten the distance and time when switching between work and life.Furthermore, it can avoid the neglect for the family caused by the long hours of work. This kind of design approach has changed people's living styles and habits progressively.
CHALLENGE: Considering the building is over 60 years old, the safety issues with the building structure, some of the walls could not be knocked out and construction of the layout had to be well thought out. The arrangement of piping also proved to be a difficult challenge in this project. Moreover, how to modernize the old building into the aged surroundings, blending them together, was also an important part of the consideration during the design process.
