DESIGN NAME: Beva Baby
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Storytelling
INSPIRATION: Kids need companion when they grow. Toys alone may not satisfy all their learning needs. BEVA Baby can tell stories and sing songs after the boot and automatically connects the home WIFI to receive the Beva radio on internet. Function buttons are designed specifically for kids to use easily on their operating area and the adults area is not easy to access, to avoid unnecessary misuse and the trouble caused, so that parents can focus on caring for the baby, rather than managing the product.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: BEVA Baby is designed to be a companion for kids. It can sing songs & tell stories, and give a hug to kids. The buttons are distributed to different area by function: Next & Mode Buttons are placed on the earphone as big stars, kids can press them easily & unconsciousely. Volume & Collect are designed smaller and on the side of earphone, for the use of parents. Rarely used buttons like bluetooth are placed at the bottom. We re-design the speaker as the belly of the toy so the look is seamless and faces the kids.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Boot the toy by pressing the power button at the bottom. Then the star sign on the earphone will shine. Kids by instints will press these shining stars unconciously, and the stories or songs will start to voice out. Every press will change a story or song. Adults can press + - signs on the side of earphones to change the volume, and other signs to favorite a story/song or pause.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in December 2014 and finished in October 2015 in Shenzhen.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: First we started by phone research with parents to learn the frequencies of different buttons/functions. e.g. Favorite is a rarely used button, and bluetooth is only used in first time. Volume button is operated mostly by adults and Next is mostly likely by kids. There are also potential needs that Volume and Power should be mistakenly operated by kids. Then we did user research to get what they desired. They like mid-range volume and cute appearance, better face the front. Last we researched on product level for material, mold, cost, area and quality of speakers to match manufactuer's needs.
CHALLENGE: In order to realize the quality of sounds, we need to compare different structures of sound outlet and media through various tests. On the other hand, we need to ensure this is a safe product for kids, e.g. there are no hurting horns on the toy or parts that can be easily pulled off.
