DESIGN NAME: Fjord
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multifunctional Carafe
INSPIRATION: As a frequent visitor to open bars and restaurants, I realized that these extra things(candle, jug, icebox) acquired more space on tables. This left very little space for the food dishes and glasswares. Although important, but in a cluttered table these tiny things are the first to be removed, thus, losing their purpose. The idea was to make these available without loss of their identity, and by giving them a new structure that occupies minimum space on tables.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: -For Bars/restaurants
-An integrated ice compartment removes the need for bulky ice boxes
-Soft mood light at the end removes the need for candles that occupy space on tables
-Easy to tilt carafe for water with easy access to ice as well. Idle sitting ice gradually melts and adds to the water below, reducing wastage.
-Reduces customer dependency on servers
-The compartment enables fusing of wines and cocktails
-Designed to blend in the environment and yet stand out due to its form and function
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The carafe blends in any kind of environment and acts as a conversation starter due to its form and function. Simply tilt the carafe for easy flow of chilled water since the bottle has an integrated ice box below the lid. The ice box's dual characteristic allows the ice to melt and flow into the water below the box. Furthermore, I have carefully placed a light in the lower compartment of the carafe, which lights the water and creates a soft ambience around it.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2017 in Pune,India and finished in June 2017 in Pune,India.

CHALLENGE: Function is easy to decide but what follows is its form to compliment it. The challenge was to get the perfect curve in the bottle, which would keep the disk in its place without any support, and have a single body to look aesthetically pleasing. I faced a production challenge since manufacturers wanted to change the shape to something that was easier to produce. I finally met an automobile parts’ supplier and through his guidance, reasoned with my manufacturers, how this carafe can be formed.
