DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Altesalux

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Luminaire

INSPIRATION:
The inspiration for this project comes from the work done on the design of a chair (Altesachair) made from the same materials, solid wood and PMMA fluorescences. After discovering the reaction of Pmma to daylight and an Led source, the desire to create a luminous object-sculpture was born ...

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Bright by day, illuminating at night. The particularity of this luminaire is that it reacts to daylight (Without being connected) and becomes illuminated at night thanks to its own Led source. The pmma plates capture the daylight by the faces and restore it only by the slices. When the luminaire is plugged in, the Led source diffuses light through the slices that become wires...

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The particularity of this luminaire is to be bright in the day. Of course, in the evening it lights up like all the lights, but it then becomes another object and creates a very strange orange-red atmosphere.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started after the Design Week of Milan in April 2017 and finished in August 2017 for an exhibition in Paris Design Week 2017 at the galery VIA in september

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Lighting Products and Fixtures Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Altesalux is made of massive Wenge and Pmma. The assembly of the parts is mechanical, without glue. The three prototypes made before the first specimen made it possible to adjust the proportions and the treatment of the light on the plexiglass. In order to reduce the loss of wood, the greatest lengths have been provided in two parts. It is the plexiglass plates that ensure the holding of all parts. The use of LED ensures a minimum consumption.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Width 470 mm x Depth 250 mm x Height 1600 mm

TAGS:
Light, Transparency, Color, Fluorescent, Wood, Sculpture, Handmade, Limited series

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
My approach is not marketing, it is aesthetic. I do not come from design, I come from the graphic arts and engraving ... This is probably why my research is above all aesthetic. To propose a new form, to give rise to an emotion and new sensations facing a "free" object that will find a place in an interior like a canvas on a large white wall ...

CHALLENGE:
The challenge of this project was light. It was necessary to build the whole before being able to verify if the object could resemble the mental image that I had made

This luminaire is a truly remarkable work of art and design. It is an innovative combination of solid wood and PMMA fluorescences that react to daylight and LED sources in a captivating and unique way. The proportions and treatment of the light on the plexiglass have been carefully adjusted to create a beautiful and mesmerizing object sculpture that will bring a unique atmosphere to any interior. The LED source ensures minimum consumption, making this design both energy-efficient and aesthetically pleasing.

I am absolutely amazed by the creativity and innovation behind Daniel Guillotin's work on Altesalux. The idea of having a luminaire that reacts to the daylight and illuminates at night, without the need to be connected, is something that I have not seen before. The PMMA plates that capture the daylight and then release it only through the slices, and the LED source that diffuses light through the slices, is a fascinating concept. The inspiration behind this project, coming from the design of a chair, is also a very interesting story. I am particularly impressed with the research behind the work, which is focused on the aesthetic, and the desire to create a luminous object-sculpture. All of these aspects make me appreciate the work even more. The achievement of winning this award and having this work recognized is truly remarkable. Well done Daniel Guillotin!
