DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Tango

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Vase

INSPIRATION:
Tango vase was born as an idea of encapsulating a form-giving experience reflected in two worlds: engineering and design. Engineering, with the process transformation capabilities leveraged by state of the art technologies; and design, with the symbolism that emphasizes an aesthetic value priority. Thus, driving a balance in a world where the boundaries between disciplines are fading, pushing aside conventional design. Inspiration for this creation was based on the combination of two scenarios, on one hand, the life outside the city, in the countryside, that allows to see the flowers again, in their natural state, alive, dancing with the wind. But when they are gathered to decorate a table or a window, they lose their dance. So, how to, symbolically, prolong that wonderful state of movement and vitality within the home? On the other hand, Tango music, as famous as Buenos Aires, Argentina, is a very fluid dance that brings life to any stage and hypnotizes the spectator. So, we decided to unite these concepts and give a shape to a vase with a dynamic visual state resulting in a seamless blend in which the flowers and the vase form a unity, an artistic unity with of sophisticated shape, texture and flow.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Tango vase is a harmonic integration between design and engineering, where the flow of character lines suggesting constant movement of a shape that develops with the eye, materializes in a unique product that delights and captivates.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The user can put the object on a table with a flowers in it, and enjoy a relaxing time to shift and drift the feelings.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
Started in February 2017 in Berlin, Germany with an academic program that included a trip to attend the Ambiente tradeshow and experience life and design culture in Germany. The program finished in March 2017 in Colombia, and was for the first time exhibited in class exposition in May for 3D Printer advantages, and integration best practices between Engineering and Design; Design is the ability to see intangibles and make them tangible, to create analogies, to conceive an object that expresses the quality of the sensual and passionate movement of Tango.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Furniture Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The object of design consists of a single part manufactured by a ceramic process. In the iterative design process, we used 3D printing to appreciate, feel and finish the shape.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Vase Dimension: Width 150 mm x Depth 150 mm x Height 210 mm.

TAGS:
Aesthetic, vase, character lines.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
In our form seeking journey, the exploration for Tango began by leveraging advanced computer aided design and surface modeling techniques, while honing in on the production approach with 3D printing experimentation. All this, motivated by contemplating the presence of dance motion in countryside flower gardens. Here, we sought to raise the value of the indispensable inspirations of dance as expressions of movement, swirl of passions, spiral of harmonies and seduction, sophisticated costumes with skirt folds that travel in the air. This journey gave us the inspiration and shape for Tango Vase, leading to a production challenge that we took on to solve by leveraging the persistent shape and gloss of ceramic materials and adapting manufacturing processes suitable to materialize our idea and enable the expression of simple beauty, through the coherent manipulation of tools and materials.

CHALLENGE:
The project ideation began while teaching a prototyping course concerning 3D Printing and its reach. The discussion turned around how shape can transcend the design principles. It is a fact that during our stay at Germany the design world could not only be observed and delimited, but also touched, sensed throughout how our hands feel the shapes, which inspired us to create this design concept.

NAME:
Universidad EAFIT

PROFILE:
EAFIT is a place to study and learn but also to investigate, innovate, create, explore, experience culture, and feel a sense of wellbeing. A place to stay. Located on the south side of Medellín, in the El Poblado sector, the main campus covers nearly 128,000 square meters (31 acres) and features blocks of classrooms, offices, laboratories, athletic facilities, auditoriums, small squares, gardens, and other spaces conducive to research, academic, sporting, cultural, and leisure activities. The Engineering Building is a major architectural highlight on campus and one of the country’s green buildings due to its natural façade insulation, rainwater harvesting and reuse system, low-wattage lighting, and airflow control system for air conditioning optimization. The seventh and eighth floors of that same building have been set aside as a space for senior administrators of the university’s Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Science in Applied Finance (MAF) programs. Further growth will also be possible because of the university’s acquisition of Los Guayabos, a park located opposite the main campus where many of the projects contemplated in the institution’s Master Plan are to be situated.
