DESIGN NAME: Wee!
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Active Work Desk
INSPIRATION: Nowadays, our daily lives involve an unhealthy amount of sitting – children do it in schools, adults do it at work and both of them do it at home.
Observing playgrounds is what inspired me – places, designed to keep children active. Then I took the idea of a swing – such a simple and fun attraction – and created an active workspace with an unusual combination of furniture.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: WEE! is an alternative work desk concept that merges a traditional work desk and a swing into a single piece of furniture. The idea behind the integrated swing seat is that the user can stay relatively active while working and does so in a fun way. What’s more, you get two pieces of furniture, a desk and a seat, as one.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The surface is made of two components: the desk and the seat. The seat can be pulled out of the desk. Under the seat are two hooks on each side that are held by magnets - these hooks can then be attached to the inner edges of the table. If you want to enter/exit the workspace, you only need to release one of the hooks
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in Febuary 2017 in Vilnius

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Surface is made from two pieces of CNC cut plywood, joined together by glue and screws. The legs of the table, made from 40 x 40 x 1.5 mm steel pipes, are connected to the bottom of desk by bolts, which allow for easy assembly of the furniture.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The desk is 1000 mm wide and 900 mm long. The height is 800 mm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Studies have shown that a person usually spends more than 10 hours a day sitting, which gradually leads to health risks such as back and shoulder pain, spine deformities, muscle and bone degeneration, ect. With constant leaps in technology and industry, our life-styles have become less and less physically demanding for our bodies, which is why we spend so much time sitting, even though it is not a natural resting position. This problem can even affect people, who are physically active after work – since 1-3 hours of exercise does not compensate for the much greater amount of time spent sitting.
Sitting itself is not dangerous - but the amount of time we spend in a single pose does. Which is why the recently popular stand-up desks are not the best solution either, as spending all day standing can put a lot of physical strain on the body, while reducing focus and productivity. So my project was primarily based on increasing movement.
CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge was testing out the swing - how would it be part of the desk, how would the user attach it to the desk, how comfortable would it be and mostly importantly - how much movement can it provide.
