INSPIRATION:
World Health Organization (WHO) has estimated 6.5 million people died each year because of air pollution. Indoor air pollution alone causes an estimated death of over 4 million. However, unlike outdoor air quality, there are no universal index or data for indoor air quality (IAQ). This is why we develop Air Quality, a Bluetooth wireless connected device that measures VOC, CO2, temperature and humidity in surrounding area.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Air Quality is a Bluetooth wireless connected device that measures VOC, CO2, temperature and humidity in surrounding area. Inspired by the look of the plant, AirQuality is designed as a handy product where the design relates to the function. Particular attention has been put in being able to integrate all the sensing technology inside the leaf whilst the supporting is only the power source just like ground would be.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Air Quality is a connected gadget designed with concepts of affordability, simplicity, durability and user-friendly. Simply place Air Quality in any indoor area and activate it via Bluetooth on your mobile (iOS or Andriod) using a dedicated app. Air Quality will then start 'inhale' the air through the air holes on the leaf, turn them into readable information and transmit to the app. A maximum of 16 different Air Quality could be connected in one mobile app.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in March 2016 and mass production shall be starting in late 2017. Development and design in Hong Kong.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Air Quality uses Bluetooth low energy 4.0 with a detection range in a free field up to 20 meters. Powered by a rechargeable battery, we managed to reduce the net weight of Air Quality to approximately 34g. Inside this tiny device, advanced electronics will be recognised when the user connects the device with his/her mobile app.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
According to 2016 data from WHO, air pollution caused 1 in 9 deaths. It is one of the top killers in the city and itself being the cause of numerous other diseases including lung cancer, stroke and heart diseases. This is why we developed Air Quality, a Bluetooth wireless connected device that measures Volatile organic compounds (VOC), that includes toxic compounds as well as unpleasant smells, together with temperature and humidity in the surrounding area. It measures and provides information and recommendations for better living.

CHALLENGE:
When starting this design project, we would like to design something that is minuscule, easy to use and fun. During our research, we found that most of the products available in the market are multi-functional products that required complicated set up and users to be knowledgeable on air pollution index. Therefore, we design Air Quality that is easy to set up, easy to understand and notify users when the air is not good.
