DESIGN NAME: Skiclub Kampen North Sea Pure
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Can
INSPIRATION: The project is based on the brand foundation of Sylt in the North Sea, the pureness, freshness of the sea and smoothness of the wadden sea. Kampen is the best-known place of Sylt and is located at the narrowest part of the island, surrounded by the rough North Sea, and the smooth Wadden Sea, an UNESCO world heritage. With all these impressions in mind it was mandatory to create a design for spirits & soft drinks, with which one can feel the extraordinary pureness, clearness and beauty of Sylt
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The uniqueness of the cans impresses via pureness, simpleness and clearness of its design. Skiclub Kampen is the only supplier who offers premium spirits and fillers/soft drinks of the same brand. The bottles and cans appear with the same design language and therefore are recognized as two parts of one brand family. The cans are unicoloured with black inscription, each of the 4 flavours are defined by one specific colour. The content of the soft drinks is identical to the colour of the cans.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The end-user interacts with the can to serve a refreshing drink of lemonade or tonic water or create a delightful cocktail with the North Sea Spirits. The design and especially the colour of the can gives already a feeling of what to expect from the drink when pouring it into a glass filled with ice cubes.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in May 2012 when Skiclub Kampen was founded, located in Kampen, Sylt. The idea was born in July 2012 and in October we started first with North Sea Spirits. During 2012 and 2015 six different flavours of spirits have been developed. In 2016 and 2017 the assortment has been completed by adding 4 different flavours of premium mixers which can be enjoyed as delicious stand-alone beverage or to perfectly enhance our unique Spirits.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The cans are produced through a mechanical cold forming process that starts with punching a flat blank from very stiff cold-rolled sheet. This sheet is made of aluminium to give it strength and formability. The flat blank is first formed into a cup about three inches in diameter. This cup is then pushed through a different forming process called "ironing" which forms the can. The printing is made by at first transferring the ink onto a rubber blanket and then from the rubber blanket onto the can.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: After extensive market observation, we saw the only chance to place new drinks in the market in being very different versus all global players and established brands. We had to distinguish our product from all others by applying a unique, pure and impactful visual appearance which represents the pureness of the content. The requirement of Ulrich Graf was to create a packaging which can be recognized across a distance in a restaurant, bar or club or even on the shelves of the supermarkets. The design has been developed without external market research. It should be a stand-alone design.
CHALLENGE: The first challenge was to create a design, which reflects the brand's heritage of the pure, soft and perfect nature of Sylt, which can be applied both on the bottles and cans. To create the right proportion between the logo and the product naming has been challenging too. The design got its perfect shape by turning the logo by 13 degrees to the left. This creative idea allowed the logo to be perceived in total and not by its individual components. The second challenge was to create the right shade of colour for each specific flavour to reflect the colour of the content.
