DESIGN DETAILS |
DESIGN NAME: QWERTY
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Sofa
INSPIRATION: The inspiration for QWERTY came from the many times I have fallen asleep on my keyboard. Thus, it became natural to make the keyboard more comfortable. The natural disposition of a keyboard did the rest and made qwerty the extremely adjustable surface it is.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Sooner or later, we all end up by falling asleep on our computer’s keyboard. Turning the archetypal image of a keyboard into a sofa bed, QWERTY holds you on its soft keys while working in the office or at home, bringing a pinch of irony in our daily life. Anyway QWERTY is much more than a sofa bed. Thanks to micro electric motors controlled by a remote control, every single keycushion is adjustable to give total freedom. In this way, the furniture becomes a unique and comfortable support.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The sofa is flexible, each key is adjustable via a special remote. The remote has 10 per-programed settings, but more can be added. Qwerty can become a bed, a sofa, a completely customizeable surface.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was created in 2012 in Teramo, and has won:
IDA Gold winner 2013 in the category of the professional home interior products and the subcategory of interior furniture;
Red Dot Award Design Concept 2016 in the category of furniture.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Furniture Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: stainless steel AISI 304, multi density polymer, artificial waterproof and flame retardant leather, electrical and software equipment, latest generation gel batteries.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: W 1100mm X D 3100mm X H 1100mm
TAGS: qwerty, vintage, flexibility, luxury, couch, sofa
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I wanted to focus on the user experience and try to combine a functional tool and an image archetype in order to produce an innovative object that guarantees flexibility and functionality, while keeping that familiarity of the object we're used to seeing. By using these familiar images, creating a hybrid of parallel world and languages, we decontextualize these forms and give them new meaning and make our lives better. The object fulfills its task by being innovative, not technological.
CHALLENGE: The challenge was including such an out of the ordinary functionality in an object that is so familiar to us. The effect that comes from that is a trasfert, between man and object.

I am absolutely in awe of the design of this sofa, aptly named "QWERTY". The attention to detail and the modern style they have achieved is nothing short of remarkable! The fabric and colors used are the perfect combination of eye-catching yet subtle and the shape of the sofa is incredibly stylish. It looks like it belongs in a modern art gallery rather than a living room! I especially love the way the seating area and the armrest have been designed - it makes the sofa look so comfortable. This is an amazing piece of furniture and I'm so glad it won the A' Design Award! Congratulations to Andrea Cingoli for their fantastic work!

The A' Design Award-winning work, QWERTY, is truly remarkable. Its unique ability to transform from a sofa to a bed, combined with the irony of turning an iconic image into a piece of furniture, is simply ingenious. The micro electric motors that allow each cushion to be adjusted to personal preference provide total freedom and comfort. This creativity is further enhanced by the research and challenges that Andrea Cingoli faced in order to make the object both familiar and innovative at the same time. The highest quality materials, such as stainless steel and artificial leather, ensure that the sofa-bed will stand the test of time. QWERTY is a perfect example of how design can be used to make life better.

What a fantastic piece of furniture design! QWERTY is a truly innovative sofa bed which combines comfort, convenience and irony. I love how the individual cushions can be adjusted to give the user total freedom, making it a unique and comfortable support. It's fantastic to see how Andrea Cingoli has repurposed the archetypal image of a keyboard and created something so useful and creative. It's no wonder that this work has been recognized with an A' Design Award!

I am absolutely thrilled at the sight of this award-winning work! QWERTY is truly a marvel of design, combining the familiar image of a keyboard with the comfort of a sofa bed. It is clear that the designer has put a lot of thought and research into creating a functional and comfortable furniture piece that can also bring a bit of irony into our lives. The innovative use of micro electric motors and remote control to adjust the individual keycushions is truly remarkable and speaks to the attention to detail that has gone into this piece. This is a stunning example of how good design can turn the ordinary into something extraordinary. Congratulations!
