| DESIGN NAME: Stature PRIMARY FUNCTION: Reading Chair INSPIRATION: When considering chair design, Arne Jacobsen’s famous Egg Chair stands out as an exceptional piece. The chair makes a statement. It holds a presence in the room it resides. It is interesting to look at while also being functional and comfortable. The objective of this project was to create a chair sharing these attributes. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Stature Reading Chair is bold and confident. Its unapologetic form and stance along with its rich material gives the chair a significant presence. The fundamental seat surfaces, the seat and the backrest, are joined in one motion to deliver a striking piece of furniture. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This chair is a unique talking piece. Each person will see something different in the chair and appreciate different aspects. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project started in September 2012 and was completed in November 2012. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The Reading Chair is made completely of 38mm mahogany. The width of the material is in proportion to the chair and reflects the magnitude and strenght of the mahogany tree. The angles used create illusions of balance and symmetry. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The seat is inclined slightly, making an angle of 110° with the backrest. A series of tests and prototypes concluded this angle provides an ideal seating position for comfortable leisure reading. The joinery used in the construction of the chair combines traditional and modern fixing techniques to ensure the joints strength. The pieces are joined using tongue and groove joints. They are also glued, screwed and plugged. TAGS: Chair, Reading, Furniture, Timber, Mahogany RESEARCH ABSTRACT: For this project the Irish National Standards were referred to to establish optimum seat dimensions. Physical and parametric models were produced to ensure the chair architecture provided optimum comfort for the user. CHALLENGE: The intrinsic design of this project presented a creative challenge. Each component of the chair is directly related to the next. Therefore the slightest change of an angle or dimension of one piece, created a ripple effect, forcing every other component to be adjusted to compensate.
