DESIGN NAME: Echo
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Tea Set
INSPIRATION: The inspiration came from the ruins of the Dabao'en Temple of Buddhists in Nanjing, one of the seven wonders in medieval age, also known as World Tower. Echo is based on this legendary discovery and the glazed temple architecture. The octahedral shape of pot lid is derived from the flying eaves of the pagoda, pot body from its architecture and cup from the shape of its wind bell. Tea cup on each side of the pot seems silently chat with each other and sit still waiting for the historical echoes.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Legends transformed into daily supply.This design is inspired by one of the “seven wonders” of medial age and adopts an imagery expression in a vivid form to turn legends into daily use. This special tea set is not only designed for tea use, but also for use of incense, calligraphy ink and storage of trivial objects. It is not only a daily use but also a cultural artistic design.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Pot and cups are within hand reach. The bottom layer is a container plate and from its middle are placed three layers-tray, cover and saucer, with well-constructed slots in a pyramid layout. Echo not only offer core functions of modern tea set but also blends with the culture of ancient Chinese architecture. It is a multifunctional product embodying the charm and elegance of traditional art. Behind the design are the passion for ancient art, a pursuit of elegance and a fusion with modern life.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2016 in Nanjing China and finished in August 2017 in Nanjing, and won Reddot Award 2016 best of the best, will exhibite in Triennale di Milano in April 2018.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The pot and cups are made of porcelain with celadon-glazed and metal-glazed decoration, tray is made of tepid red sandalwood with flickering texture with the unique design of swastika patterns. It can serve as pot tray or ink stand cover The middle spare space can be used for tea washing, producing ink with pine ash or burning incense for introspection or to your own enjoyment.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Helping people experience long history of cultural legend everyday. The glazed tower, legend of Buddha’s head relic and religion values are all merged into the design of this tea set and it enables people to experience culture while drinking tea with fun of playing calligraphy and burning incense, which bringing customers a fine taste of gracious life.
CHALLENGE: In the storybook The Garden of Paradise, Hans Christian Andersen writes “I have just come from China, where I danced round the porcelain tower till all the bells jingled again." That porcelain tower in Andersen’s writing is believed to be the Dabao'en Temple of Buddhists in Nanjing today, so the challenge of designing this tea set is how to transform this legend into daily supply.
