| DESIGN NAME: Traces PRIMARY FUNCTION: Womenswear Collection INSPIRATION: The ideology is that when you erase the traces, you destroy beauty. Luck and Misfortune comes in turn. The things you experienced, no matter good or bad, they are part of your body. Inspirations come from designer's stressful high school examination memories. Emotions such as oppressive, massive and repetitive inspire to explore themes such as the exam papers, Chinese youth uniforms, Victorian costume details, Mai 68 student movement. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The collection shows intricately crafted, multi-layered garments and explorations into digital printing, digital embroidery and elastic material weaving, and creates thought-provoking silhouettes through a conscious layering textiles to represent the constraint of the Chinese examinations. The collection's concept goes against the over-simplified garments in mass production, and brings back the craftsmanship with the contemporary aesthetic. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: At first sight, the collection unfolds a fusion of craftsmanship, casual silhouettes and condense, flowing feelings. The layering fabric manipulation and netting fabric indicate the pressure of Chinese high school exam and constraint of breathe. The fabric manipulation ideas develop more innovative structures and shapes to the collection through draping. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in December 2016 in Chicago and finished in April 2017, and it was exhibited in Chicago in May 2017, and was exhibited in Chicago in May 2017. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Couture tailoring technique, Digital Printing, Digital embroidery, Hand Waving Technique with Elastic bands and Bias Fabric Manipulation. Starting by waving colorful elastic bands on the netting fabric, and transformed the 3D waving fabric into 2D digital printing. Moving on, Rong used digital printing images to develop new shapes and different fabric manipulation like the layering organza, the pearling edge georgette. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The Whole Collection consist of 12 Looks of Womenswear, US size 4 TAGS: womenswear, couture, fashion designer, textile, feminine RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The ideology is that when you erase the traces, you destroy beauty. At first sight, the collection unfolds a fusion of craftsmanship, casual silhouettes and condense, flowing feelings. The layering fabric manipulation and netting fabric indicate the pressure of Chinese high school exam and constraint of breathe. The fabric and textile ideas inspired by the exam papers and artworks by Susan Hefuna. Silhouette and Garment Details developed from Victorian costume details, Chinese youth uniform and Mai_68 student uniform. CHALLENGE: The hard part is how to alive the vintage garment details and make it contemporary. I experiment with traditional waving technique, but transforming the 3D waving fabric into 2D digital printing. Moreover, experimenting digital embroidery on mesh fabric is a challenge, since find the harmony between right threads and mesh fabric need attempts. It is important to know the specialty of different thread types on stretch or non-stretch. NAME: Rong Zhang PROFILE: Rong Zhang is a Chinese Womenswear Fashion Designer. Her collection is defined by its artistic fusion of craftsmanship, modern femininity, and youth culture influences with a sense of refined ease. Inspiration drawn from contemporary art, subculture is combined with an emphasis on tailoring and the manipulation of fabrics. Balanced between tradition and modernity, harmony and contradiction, Rong creates thought-provoking silhouettes through breaking the garment stereotype. Rong Zhang received her Bachelor degree in Womenwear from London Collage of Fashion in 2015. Using rich and geometrical patterns, the art of folding, creating volume through construction, Rong’s undergraduate collection has been featured in leading publications such as Vogue. Currently, Rong finished her Master Fashion Design Degree in School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and her collections has been selected for ‘The Chinese Festival’ Exhibition in London V&A Museum 2013, ‘1ndependent15’ Design Show in London 2015 and ‘The Costume Colloquium V-Restraint and Excess in Dress’ Exhibition in Florence 2016, ‘Midwest Fashion Week 2017’and ‘FashionX Runway Austin 2017’. In the past accolades have included ‘Raffles Design Institution First Year Scholarship’ (2010), ‘The top 15 Designer for Tomorrow Award’ (2015). |
