| DESIGN NAME: Tri Chapter PRIMARY FUNCTION: Breaktime Tableware Set INSPIRATION: Inspired by 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), we try to bring the power of tranquillity to people’s drinking rituals. Pulling away from the time & space currently inhabited, we experience a magical journey from bud to neuron. Discipline or Freedom, mutuopia stimulates ways of usages blended with different lifestyles, amuses the ethos of etiquettes and connects inner-self with grand universe to explore the unknown state of conscious UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The cup fully expresses the aesthetics of the combination of triangular and circular shapes in three-dimension with a marvellous geometric arrangement. The cup is made of 100% porcelain. The triangle shape saucer modernises an innovative yet sophisticated way to serve tea or coffee. The delicate spoon has a pyramidal counterweight that allows it to stand upright. It has been engineered to sit perfectly on the saucer. The saucer and spoon are made of PVD coated zinc alloy in five colours. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The whole tableware set is served with coffee and tea during break time. The triangle shape saucer modernises an innovative yet sophisticated way to serve tea or coffee. The corner is more easily and comfortable to be grabbed by the user. The delicate spoon has a pyramidal counterweight that allows it to stand upright. It has been engineered to sit perfectly on the saucer. The spoon works perfectly when stirring your tea (or coffee) or serving pastry treats. The cup is suitable for any table. It can shape the liquid in a novelty way. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in April 2016 in Shanghai and launched to be produced in May 2017. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The cup is made of 100% white porcelain in black matte glaze or transparent shine glaze. The saucer and spoon are made of zinc alloy by pressure casting process. Then use PVD coating to assure them in food grade safety. We offer five colours for the saucer and spoon, blue, gold, rose gold, black and silver, respectively. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Cup D 90mm, L 107.5mm, H 65mm; Saucer L 136mm, W 120mm, H 12mm; Spoon L 120mm, W 14mm, H 7mm; Set packaging L 150mm, W 134mm, H 80mm TAGS: Tableware, cup, spoon, saucer, tea, coffee, break time, PVD, ceramic, porcelian, zinc alloy, press casting RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We used qualitative research to explore people's daily drinking behaviors and rituals. The primary research methods used were observation and interview. We observed every detail of how people interact with their tableware, such as the gestures and postures of how people grab a saucer, hold a cup, pick up a spoon and how they sip and slurp different liquids in different occasion. Our participants were in different ages. Consequently, the form, color and material of tableware are the most factors. CHALLENGE: The most challenge part of this project is to manufacture every object as we wanted. The manufacturer in China was still using old techniques to produce ceramic products. The first version of our porcelain cups was made from a handmade mould. The straight surface wasn't straight enough. Then we persuaded them to combine 3D printing technology with the old tech, which took a long time. However, the result was good, we got the exact form we wanted and the production time was reduced. With the fast development of artificial intelligence, mutuopia embodies the sino-futurism and seeks the echo of high daily sensibility. mutuopia utilises provocatively aesthetic perception for re-interpreting philosophical essence into contemporary design pieces. We explore the innovative moments of life scenarios, observe the diversity of emotional needs, and evoke people convey imaginative attitudes to lifestyles via playing with our objects. mutuopia was found in 2016 by product designer Xi and design strategist Zhanling, both RCA Innovation Design Engineering graduates. Spontaneously, Xi and Zhanling collected a group of young creative illuminants with hybrid backgrounds to work together, to have fun together and to create extraordinary works together. |
