DESIGN NAME: Indoor Outdoor Bathroom
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bathroom
INSPIRATION: As the task was to design a shower room we looked for inspiration in different forms of water in Nature.
The shower screen was inspired by caves and waterfalls where water materializes itself into vertical sculptures that naturally become focal points of its surroundings. Complex shapes of rocks and lush greenery around waterfalls became an inspiration for the formal language of the bathroom.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The project is an exploration of a theme of Indoor-Outdoor space. By studying characteristics of Nature and translating them into language of design, we created an in-between zone that is neither Inside nor Outside, a metaphor of Nature.
The central piece is a 3-dimensional trellis made of gold-plated jewellery chains that guides air-filtering climbing plants.
We applied principles of Cradle to Cradle, reusing existing elements and integrating non-toxic, healthy building materials.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The project is about transformation and interaction. Nature Changes and Nature Engages. The plants change volume through time and engage the Client as she witnesses their growth and evolution. The reflective, smooth texture and versatile patterns of the walls and ceiling seem to change depending on the lighting conditions and time of the day.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The projected started in February 2016 and finished in March 2017. The project is located in central London.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: We applied principles of Cradle to Cradle and used non-toxic building materials. We reused elements from the previous fit out, like WC and towel handles, to minimise waste. The shower screen is made of recycled glass. For walls, ceiling and floor we used Tadelakt - a lime-based waterproof plaster that is a natural material. All paints in the project are low VOC and tiles are C2C certified. In order to minimise the environmental impact we used only LED lighting and water saving fittings.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The project is a refurbishment of a 6 square meter en-suite bathroom.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We researched materials for the trellis that could handle hot, humid environment. We wanted to use stainless steel cables but the Client requested a more feminine colour. We selected jewellery chain that gave the ideal strength, flexibility and an aesthetic effect. To avoid off gassing of VOCs from coatings our choice was limited to raw metals only. To keep the shiny effect we could not use raw brass or copper that would darken with time. A jewellery consultant suggested to use gold-plating.
CHALLENGE: The Client wished to have a space where she could feel like she was being Outside while being inside her bathroom. We could not physically open the bathroom to the outdoors as it is located in the middle of the house. We faced the challenge how to metaphorically bring outdoors to the inside. As the Inside and the Outside is subjective and perceived through senses we decided to create design that speaks to senses and allows to bend the barrier between the Indoor and the Outdoor.
