DESIGN NAME: Scholar Pen
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Rollerball pens
INSPIRATION: Our design inspirations came from the historical significance of Xian as the ancient capital where the first Chinese imperial examination was held, and its relevance to our client, Guanzhong Shuyuan, once crowned as one of the top four highest academic institution in Shaanxi Province. The top scholar, or Zhuangyuan, was ranked first overall nationwide and highly respected for his merit. Paying tribute to Xian as the intellectual epicenter of ancient China, we hope this pen will bring good luck to students who strives to achieve their best academic performance in examinations.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Top Scholar Pen is hand crafted and made of environmental friendly materials except for pen ink. The pen cap is designed to look like a top hat, alike those wore by Chinese scholars in the past. The pen barrel resembles the Chinese fortune telling sticks holder, the Cim Bucket. The pens fit in to look like fortune sticks, representing auspicious blessings for optimal academic performance. The Chinese characters written in calligraphy strokes on the pen and barrel pay tribute to imperial calligraphy by the ancient Emperor, which is often a gift to the top scholar.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The pen barrel acts as a pen-holder for the Top Scholar Pens. Each barrel contains 10 pens. To write, simply remove the pen cap from the Top Scholar pen.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project began in Xi'an in March 2015, starting with product design, sample production, modification enhancements and then production of the final product, lasting 3 months. The product first debut for sale at the Chung Chi Academy in June 2015.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The main material used is renewable kraft paper, and most of the other materials used in this product are either recycled or environmental friendly. Aesthetically, kraft paper gives the overall design a raw subtle feel that resonates with the diligence of committed scholars of the past. The use of earth friendly materials and that the entire product is hand-crafted, also promotes the oriental philosophy of harmony with nature. This shows our small yet important commitment to reduce the use of plastic for mass production pens.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Pen size: 160mm (Height) x 80mm (Width)
Pen Barrel: 210mm (Height) x 450mm (Width)

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Ancient paintings and historical text about the Chinese imperial examinations and the Emperor's calligraphy strokes, available from online academic resources and library books, were referred to as part of the research. The objective is to design a product that has uniquely meaningful visuals which buyers can relate to, and yet still maintains its user functionality. Choice of materials used were also carefully selected in person to incorporate the eco friendliness concept while considering production cost.
CHALLENGE: The most challenging part of the project, was the combining of aesthetic design with historical relevance on an ordinary, widely used product. There are many substitutes in the market for a pen, so we have to go back to our drawing board, review consumer behavior and brainstorm what would motivate them to be interested in this product. Naming the product Zhuangyuan Pen or Top Scholar Pen gives the product a new meaning to the consumer that goes beyond the functionality of a pen. It is the symbolic meaning of using these pens as a lucky charm that would attract consumers.
