DESIGN NAME: Meiji the Chocolate
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Sweets Packaging
INSPIRATION: The simple layout was used to suggest a page from a cacao reference book. For the main illustration, we used abstract patterns to reflect the individual characters of each bean flavor. While the outside of the package remains simple to convey the message clearly, we chose to line the inside of the package with the full pattern to evoke an excited expectation when opening. The individual packets inside use a repeating pattern of the cacao illustration, reinforcing the "chocolate" image.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: With "meiji THE Chocolate," flavors transform from "Bean to Bar." Cacao beans are carefully selected to create the perfect bar of chocolate, and each bar reflects an elegant luster, emits a sweet fragrance, and melts sublimely in your mouth. Using a simple design with the product logo, cacao illustrations, and craft paper texture, the foil stamps and colors vary by cacao flavor. By displaying these designs side by side, we aimed to transform the entire display into a "Bean to Bar" chocolate shop.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: It has become popular for young people to reuse the package by making accessories, notebooks, smartphone cases, 3D art, chopstick holders, etc. and uploading their projects onto social media sites.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was started in December of 2015, and the product went on shelves in September of 2016.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: In order to create the impression and feel of craft paper without sacrificing crisp lines, we used a process of printing the text and visual texture on uncoated paper and applying a matte finish. To draw the eye towards the cacao illustration in the center, we used foil stamping to create a metallic silver pattern representing the individual chocolate flavor.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Meiji's mission as a producer is to deliver easily accessible, chocolatier-quality chocolate at a reasonable price to Japanese customers. We believe it's important to look at how to speed the delivery of the Cacao. Rather than "Bean to Bar," we are aiming for a "Farm to Bar" process. We want to deliver a chocolate culture by bringing speciality chocolates to the Japanese marketplace. Like with rice and other local products, we want to create a world where Japanese people have a passion for cacao.
CHALLENGE: It was a particular challenge to create identity-forming, foil-printed patterns that reflected the individual flavor characteristics of each chocolate.
