DESIGN NAME: Shape of Nature
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Upcycled Fabric Planter
INSPIRATION: Since an excessive amount of trash clothing is burned and damages the environment, a solution for reducing the trash is needed. According to the survey we did, most people can accept the recycled fabric products which are not too close to them. Furthermore, the fabric has the feature of absorbing water, which can be good for plants. Considering these two reasons, we decided to try and make upcycled “clothes” for plants.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Hanji is a kind of new upcycled fabric made by us which contains shredded trash clothing and wool. By testing growing plants in Hanji plant pots for three months, we found that no mold appeared on the surface of it. We also found that applying this material on plant pots can allow plant pots to absorb surplus water, which prevents them from breeding mosquitos in tropical areas like Taiwan. Moreover, a Hanji plant pot can be a transplant bag. Users can directly plant it in the ground without taking plants from the plant pot.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Shape of Nature is the name of this upcycled plant pot. We apply the image of mountains on it to express that recycled fabric can peacefully live with nature. Users can carry the Shape of Nature by holding the bronze handle. No matter whether they set the plant pot on the table or hang it on the wall, it will be an unobtrusive eco-friendly decoration. Because of the features of Hanji and the minerals inside of the plant pot, users do not need to water them frequently.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in May 2016 in Taiwan and finished in April 2017 in Taiwan, and was exhibited in Taichung, Taiwan in April 2017, in Taipei, Taichung in May 2017, and in Taichung, Taiwan in October 2017. It also was displayed in Seoul International Invention Fair in December 2017.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The main body of Shape of Nature is a upcycled fabric plant pot which can be totally made by hand. Users can decide how big the fabric plant pot is and what color set on the surface of it. We provide the basic sample with guidelines drawn on paper for users, so they can design shape based on these lines. Then, they can cut off the shape they design from Hanji cloth. After they make the fabric plant pot, they can set it on the bronze frame that we already made.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Outer Dimensions: Width 280mm x Depth 100mm x Height 300mm (black). Width 230mm x Depth100 mm x Height 300mm (bronze).

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: According to the survey we did, we found that people feel the upcycled fabric might have hygiene problems and they cannot accept the products too close to them. As a result, we choose to design a plant pot. Since Hanji, the upcycled cloth, can absorb and keep water, we apply it on the main body of plant pots. After we grow plants in these plant pots for three months, we found the plant pots did not become moldy and the plants grew well. Furthermore, because Hanji has many capillaries, the roots of plants can get enough air and can grow through of it. Therefore, when the plants grow up, users can transplant the plants in the ground without removing the plant pots.
CHALLENGE: In these days, most people only know a little about upcycled fabric products so they have some doubts about this kind of product. For this situation, we bravely decided to show the obvious original material in Shape of Nature in order to let people interact with the material directly. By adding some colors of wool on Hanji, the appearance of it improves. Therefore, people will gradually be more willing to use upcycled fabric products.
