DESIGN NAME:
The Warm Concept

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Residential apartment

INSPIRATION:
Key motivating feature of this project is the use of warm color scheme, combined with many natural industrial style textures for construction. The aim is to create a natural looking yet elegant atmosphere for a comfortable home. Traditionally, the use of industrialism is about exposing all the lies beneath to achieve raw, edgy style. Structural elements are turned into showpieces, achieving a look that seems unfinished. However, the hope of this design is to bring the use of industrialism to an all new level, with refined texture and material finishing combined with the warm color scheme. As the owner preferred warm colors, the designer was inspired to select gold and brown as the primary colors of this home. Interestingly, the designer commented that the combination with gold and brown background colors reminds him of the Sphinx mythology. The use of this color scheme is extended to the selection of many natural industrial style texture and materials, such as walnut, sandstone, cement and tiles for construction. The combination of lighting effect, such as droplights with different height in the lounge room, made by eight LED lights imitated tungsten filament lamp and the iron cover is an interesting mixture to compliment the color scheme to create a focal point of this home.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The home is heavily permeated with rich, warm exclusive flavor. Upon entry, there is a touch of greenery to compliment a touch of human nature. With the lamp throwing out a dim light, it seems that people are back to the years with calm mind and body relaxed. To make the place look more full and colorful with a stronger sense of furnishings, the designer have made use of many industrial style textures and materials to decorate the surroundings of this home. For example in the dining area, it has make use of warm colored timber combined with a dark brown wooden curve backdrop waving from the ceiling as the background for the dining table. On the side, there is a sliding door, wrapped with 3 layers of golden wall paper, which full demonstrated the designer’s use of gold and brown as the primary color scheme. As for the lounge area, the wall is lined up with cement boards mount with a rustic wooden art piece to create a stronger sense of surroundings. The area is accompanied with a brown leather sofa and the dual purpose small table, wrapped with the same materials and wooden linings. To further highlight the warm tone, a low saturation color carpet is placed in the lounge area with a light colored tile for the TV background as a contrast to make the warm colors to stand out more. The bedroom have also embraced a warm color tone and texture and materials to enrich the warm concept to create an enclosed, yet calming environment for relaxation. The walls and bedsheets featured a light cream color as a contrast to the warm color tone. Further, a rare material (a chopstick shaped rustic brown tile) was used to build the feature wall facing the bed and by the door. Also leather materials were to wrap soft cushion behind the bed creating a second feature wall in the room.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The flow of the project was relatively smooth, as the owner who is embraced with warm colors have given the designer lots of freedom and creative space to design this home with selective colors, elements and texture. Unlike traditional homes, the designer have made use of warm colors combined with a refined industrialism style to decorate this home. The use of cement boards, tiles, wooden decor to decorate the walls have made the room look more full and colorful with a stronger senses of surroundings. During the construction process, the designer monitored closely to see if the outcome is in line with the expectation of using industrial style materials, but completed with refined finishing. The lighting effect is also important to create a suitable ambience for the warm scheme.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in January 2016 in Macau and finished in August 2016 and it was featured in Modern Home Magazine (Hong Kong) in October 2016.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Since the host prefers to warm color, the designer have chosen gold and brown as the primary colors, while taking into account the variety of industrial style textures that make the walnut, sandstone, cement, tiles and so on to combine with for interweaving level, so as to set the appropriate backdrop for the elegant furniture. Apart from the warm color scheme, adding some achromatic colors or cold colors of low saturation is a useful tool to reinforce the warm color scheme. The concept is similar to when you take too many desserts there will be fatigue for the sense of taste, but drinking some water or taking some salty food will restore the sensitivity of the taste bud to desserts. This visible sense has the similar inertness. A touch of this strategy is used in the lounge, bedroom, kitchen and hallway area to reinforce the warm concept.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
To fit in with the warm concept, beside the use of warm colors, designer have chosen materials and furniture with similar color tone to compliment the overall design. From a technical standpoint, when you enter the hallway into the living room, a fragment of the hallway was purposely dismantled to enlarge the space of the living room. To embrace the warm scheme with materials, instead of using paint, all the walls within the living room are decorated with different style tiles and wooden piece for a suitable effect. Also the golden slide door on the cabinet acts as a semi-feature wall along the dining table as well as functional divider for the decorative items.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
as the name goes, warm colors produce warmth. Apart of creating a warm feeling with this design concept, all associations of warm colors are directed to feelings, such as passion, stimulus, celebration and happiness. According to research, the warm scheme is also commonly in the Chinese culture to create a sense of happiness and harmony. The use of gold as one of the primary colors is well fitted in the concept. Apart from a warm feeling, experiments have shown that deviation of people’s feel in temperature in rooms of warm colors and cold colors may vary up to be 3 to 4 degrees. This becomes a bonus during winter period, as the selected color scheme makes the home visually and mentally warmer.

CHALLENGE:
A good design has the power to change one’s life, while in return, the life and belief will also affect the design. This case vividly shows the interaction between the design and life: creative layout and design, integrated with the choice of warm colors (gold and brown) to create happiness and harmony. The combination of industrial style materials used in a refined manner and lighting effect have successfully create an elegant and comfortable home.
