RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The study of "Kala" was inspired by oil-paper umbrellas, an iconic item for Hakka ethnic group in Taiwan. Echoing to the oil-paper umbrella structure, the design team used the laminated bamboo for the whole structure, which is firm, durable and elastic. It reaches some level of yield and remains the spirits of traditional crafts by making molds through tenacity of the bamboo and oriental traditional bamboo crafts. Bamboo consider as environment friendly material, helping to slow down the deforestation. The team will continually to study and develop the probability of the use of bamboo material to create more interactional and interesting design.
CHALLENGE: The most challenging in this designed is the precision and calculation of the strength of the laminated bamboo, taking too many laminated bamboo strip definitely will provide sufficient weight sustain, but will waived out its simplicity and beauty, the problem vice versa. Bending the laminated bamboo is another challenging issued, it needs accuracy to shape it. Finally is transferring the sliding structure of the oil-paper umbrella to the retractable mechanism in order to achieve sitting interaction.

I am absolutely in awe of the design of Kala. It is a perfect example of how to use natural materials in a modern way. The bamboo is skillfully laminated to achieve a beautiful and strong structure, while the retractable feature of the stool makes it incredibly practical. It is an impressive combination of sleek design and utilitarianism. The A' Design Award is thoroughly deserved by Kala and its creators Chung-Sheng Chen, Chung-Yen Wang and Yi-Lin Wu.

I'm in awe of the creativity and craftsmanship that was used to create the Kala Laminated Bamboo Retractable Stool. It's clear that a lot of thought and attention was put into the design which is evident in the elasticity of the bamboo material, the retractable mechanism in the central axis, and the oil-paper umbrella inspired shape. The fact that it descends lightly and smoothly when someone sits on it and ascends back to its position when they stand up is fascinating. It truly is a unique piece of furniture that I'm sure will be admired by many.

This award-winning design is truly exceptional in its combination of simple aesthetics, ingenious design, and environmentally friendly production methods. The retractable mechanism used in this piece is ingenious, creating an interesting interaction when sitting down, and allowing the stool to ascend back to its original position when standing up. The use of laminated bamboo as the main material is a great choice as it is durable, elastic, and a sustainable option. It is clear that a lot of research and thought went into this design, and it is a great example of what can be achieved when creativity and craftsmanship come together. Congratulations to the winners for such an impressive accomplishment!
