PRIMARY FUNCTION: Centerpiece
INSPIRATION: The Ajoure centerpiece are inspired by “ajour” - a style of jewelry design similar to filigree, which leaves open spaces in the worked metal. It was mainly used in the making of gold jewelry, such as pendants and brooches in France. The result is reminiscent of the style of lace known as "ajour" - which is what the product is named after.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Ajoure centerpiece is a contemporary design inspired by ancient metal-craft techniques. The metallic lace pattern along with delicate forming of the edges creates a sculptural form that is a unique combination of form and function. Its a very versatile piece that can function as a decorative sculpture, a serving tray or the perfect holiday gift.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: -
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started as a prototype in June 2014 as a school project in San Francisco. The product was manufactured in India in 2016 and launched in the US market in 2017.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The metallic lace is created by fine laser cutting machines. Each piece is then formed and finished by hand.

CHALLENGE: The challenge for the designer was to create a contemporary, timeless form that could represent the visual values of a 14th century craft technique. The designer, Rupa Chaturvedi wanted to ensure that the production process was as close to the original artisinal effort as possible.
