DESIGN NAME: Mr Beam II
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Desktop Lasercutter & Engraver
INSPIRATION: We started developing our Mr Beam laser cutter and engraver because we were fascinated by the technology and its possibilities, but weren't able to afford any of the industrial machines. Also, we were not happy with the usability of existing software solutions. We wanted to create the easiest to use laser cutter for the desktop, platform independent and mobile ready.
Our ambition was to maximize the working area whilst keeping the overall footprint to a minimum, so Mr Beam still fits on your desktop.
We wanted to create a versatile tool not only for professionals but also for makers and even for people who are not very clever with their hands.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The design with its incivise corner flaps states that this is a tool you can use in your workshop but also on your office desk. The flaps allow to store it upright without scratching the housing. It is portable and also easy to access and control with any wifi enabled device running a web-browser.
We attached a camera to the safety lid. It provides an accurate preview of the working area including the object you have placed there. Dragging a design into the desired position is now super easy.
A full metal safety housing closed with safety glass lid assures secure opperation.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: -
CHALLENGE: The challenge was to design a safety housing that is easy to produce, avoiding expensive tooling costs. For the right laser class classification there have to be various mechanisms and the housing has to be light-tight.
