DESIGN NAME: Encircle Speakers
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Portable Surround Sound
INSPIRATION: This project was inspired by the divide in the market when it comes to portable and home speakers. Consumers spend thousands of dollars on surround sound entertainment systems for their homes, yet have nothing comparable to choose from in the portable market. Encircle speakers are created to be a bridge between the two categories, to be the first portable surround sound speaker.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Modern portable speakers constantly improve in quality, performance, and battery life, however they rarely innovate on their base function. The Encircle speaker system is a conceptual next step in the right direction, with the incorporation of true, portable surround sound. The design consists of a group of seven speakers that function together as a single portable speaker, but can be separated to encapsulate the user in sound.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: To transform the speaker into a surround sound setup, remove the strap and place the seven speakers around your work area. The speakers automatically sync volume and location to create a uniform audio space.
Encircle can also be used as a single portable unit. Stack all of the disks together and secure them with the strap. All of the speakers, including the command base, will work in unison to create a boombox experience similar to other portable speakers on the market.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was started in July of 2016 and was completed that month in Ocean City, Maryland

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: When I approached the task of redesigning the speaker, I was confronted by the magnitude and scale of the current market. Hundreds of companies offer thousands of speakers; each one slightly different than the last. If I were to design a new innovation, I had to see what these speakers were missing and capitalize on it.
What I found was while portable speakers were stagnating, home cinemas were flourishing with new designs and concepts. The largest draw was the quality of the surround sound; the bass, the immersion, and the overall feeling. Why should personal speakers not contain the largest feature that homes capitalize on?
From this point onward, I strove to design the best personal surround sound experience possible. I sketched over 500 pages of concepts, full with user opinion tests and research into emerging technologies in the audio world. The final product of this stage was an idea for a stackable set of speakers that could be separated and placed around the user.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: This project was delivered digitally, with a fully considered Solidworks model and renderings through Keyshot.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Research for this project revolved around the current market and future possibilities for speaker technology. The entire scope of music based technology was analyzed; from headphones and earbuds to entire room speaker setups. The customers of these various products were surveyed to reveal gaps in the market that the design would later capture.
After this phase, current technologies were analyzed that could potentially be incorporated into the product. Specialized batteries, contact charging, and advanced Bluetooth technologies were heavily researched in order to ensure a feasible concept product.
CHALLENGE: The hardest part of this design was creating a way that the product could be controlled without overwhelming the user with interfaces. A stack of speakers, all with dials and controls, would offer a confusing and uncomfortable experience for the user. To solve this issue, one speaker was designated the "lead" with a power cable. When the "lead" speaker was covered, a tactile control panel on this cable would let the user control and carry the unit as a single operative speaker.
