| DESIGN NAME: Butterfly Magnetic Effects PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multi-functional Pen Holder INSPIRATION: Butterflies have been widely used in many objects of creation as they symbolize rebirth, soul and transition. The design inspiration was my cross cultural journey departure from the butterfly kingdom of Taiwan to the vivid modern stained glass of a German church. Three endangered species of Taiwanese butterflies, and the black and white butterfly were converted into consideration for the unique design. One geometric colorful butterfly was reborn as in this digital era. The intention of the design was to make something different from the current object and to give it meaning. It might also evoke people’s environmental awareness of how to protect our natural world. This is how design works — bringing nature and vitality into life. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Vibrant colors merge with symmetric outlines of butterflies in appropriate proportion. The butterfly magnetic penholder has been considered in both aesthetics and function as part of an interior decorating idea for the home office. It's suitable on various pen-clips within 6 mm width to hold and carry your favorite pen anywhere. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Innovation pen holder and bookmark gel effectively with books, office's partitions, white boards and refrigerators as performed in different function. It's very easy to use, only two actions; fold and unfold. Using it with book as bookmark and pen carrier; placing it on the office’s partition, white board and refrigerator as pen keeper on the particular area. Furthermore, it can be utilized as a paper organizer to separate your documents and receipts. Let this beautiful butterfly penholder enrich your life from home to office. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The symmetric wings are made of synthetic paper and soft magnetic material. The traditional bookmark has been revolutionized and transformed through the project experiment— Material, scale, shape, space, loading gravity capacity, duration and usage. Utilizing 6 mm width gap for fold and unfold the pen clip and paper is a significant part of the design. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Material: Synthetic Paper, Soft Magnetic Size: Around 8.5 x 8 cm (Die-Cut Shape) Model: Butterfly Pen Holder, Bookmark, PenKeeper, 3 in 1 Package: * One butterfly pen holder on square folding gift card (13.6 x 13.6 cm) with square envelope (14.4 cm x 14.4 cm) * One butterfly pen holder on square card (9.6 x 9.6 cm) * Two butterflies pen holder on rectangle card (18 x 9.6 cm) * Three butterflies pen holder on rectangle folding card (18 x 9.6 cm) * One butterfly pen holder with a pen on the paper pen case. When reading a book or taking a note, thoughts are formed that help to make our home and office lifestyle more interesting. What will it be like? CHALLENGE: Experimenting is the most important part to realize and form the idea. Initially, I use paper, soft magnetic material to create some bookmark prototypes in various scales, thinness and shapes, and test them in different usages— with books, pens, white boards, and even placing it with a pen on the refrigerator to see if it would still keep in the same position for a long time. In order to hold the pen clip, the structure of the butterfly pen holder leaves with a 6-7 mm gap on two sides of the soft magnetic material. During the experiment the appropriate proportion of butterfly pen holders were confirmed. The function itself is not only to use as a bookmark but a pen holder, pen keeper and pen carrier.
