DESIGN NAME: Unwired
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Wireless Power Strip
INSPIRATION: The idea behind Unwired is driven by the frustration of sudden power outages in the middle of work, which lead to hours of unsaved work being lost. The other inspiration is the limiting nature of current power banks that can only charge USB devices and do not possess the required power output for some electronic products such as laptops.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Unwired is a power strip with a detachable wire, which turns it into a portable power supply that can be moved freely around the house or even outdoors. The internal battery prevents corrupted or lost files in case of unexpected power outages.
As the internal battery is removable, Unwired is future proof and can stay up to date with the advancement of battery technology.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: When idle, Unwired can be charged from the circular connector on the left side, but can be used while charging as well.
It can be used without an external power supply and acts as a portable charger.
The small display on the upper left corner displays monitors real-time performance usage.
The power supply can be switched on and off quickly on the right side.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: October 2016 - March 2017 in Shanghai
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Digital and Electronic Device Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The casing material consists of a PC/ABS blend with good shock absorption and wear resistance, while achieving a flame-retardant standard of V-0. The conductive chip is made with tin phosphor bronze for flexibility, longevity, and conductivity.
Through the built-in step-up inverter circuit, the lithium battery's 12V DC voltage is converted into a 220V AC output.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Dimensions: 200mm x 90mm x 50mm
Input Voltage: 12V
Output Voltage: 220V & 5V
TAGS: portable charger, power strip, power outage
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: -
CHALLENGE: As the current battery technology is limited, the internal structure of Unwired had to be customised to accommodate the size and weight of a battery of this capacity. Due to the flexible structure of this design, the battery is replaceable and can be upgraded further down the line.
