DESIGN NAME: Teawood - Aberdeen
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Cafe and Restaurant
INSPIRATION: Aberdeen is famous of its quaint and charming Fishing Village. Inspired by the location of the restaurant, designers get the insight from the unsophisticated environment and the unique character of the place, such as gold and blue water reflection, blinking of fishes’ scales during sunrise and sunset, also the wooden paddle and fishing tools, those small fishing boats and the living room on boat. Designer use these elements to create a happy dinning place with the concept Happy Fishermen.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Teawood is a chain Taiwanese Cafe & Restaurant. Unlike many franchising, each store has its unique identity but echoes the brand value and can be linked as a story at the same time.
Teawood at Aberdeen with the design concept Happy Fishermen due to the historical background of the place, where was a fishing village famous in Hong Kong. With signature pattern of fishing tools and symbolic colour of Hong Kong’s fishing village, designers come up with a contemporary meets traditional interior design.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The restaurant able to serve over 130 customers at one time, it is important that the kitchen and the beverage corner work independently without interrupt another. Separation of kitchen and beverage corner in the store facilitates the business operation and better serves the customers. A fishing boat hangs upside down above the beverage corner catches the eye of customers and who will follow the curve of boat’s body to enter the main dining area.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in August 2016 and finished in November 2016 in Hong Kong.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Mixing the fishing tools with furniture design, and use bamboo, hemp rope and wood as the core materials to raise the theme and create fishing scenario. Blue and yellow semi-circle plates on the wall stimulate the wave of the sea and curve shield is imitating the living room at boat. Special designed lights are applied in the store, one with the bamboo basket design, one with electric motor design and one with fishing net design.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Throughout study on the historical background of Aberdeen by readying journal and visiting photo exhibition of it, designers also visit those fishermen living on the boat nowadays. Inspired by the wooden tools they use and the positive attitude toward fishing, the Aberdeen store gets into a lively and trad-modern design on fishing and floating village. It works perfectly with the location and meets the expectation of visitor.
CHALLENGE: Teawood is a fresh brand and targeting youngsters and young professional, the design should not go too far on historical and traditional, thus the design provides contemporary and refreshing look by the use of colour and interesting design of lights and wall decoration. Although the dining area is comparably large, its entrance is extreme unobtrusive and needs highlights to amaze those walk by people. An interesting booth seat near the entrance is designed and successfully raises customer’s curiosity to enter the store.
