In developing the Ashtray coffee table, the idea was to take some of our societies outmoded or benign products and give them a new life; to alter the “image” of how we interpret these shapes. The Ashtray shape for example carries with it a connotation of being unhealthy, smoking, a passing fad, and tobacco industry; conversely, in the past it was regarded that smoking was cool, hip, sophisticated etc… From those two competing ideas, the simple shape of a dished out square into a circle is quite beautiful on its own merits.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The most unique aspect of the Ashtray_CT is the subject matter coupled with the scale of the object. To aid in redefining the meaning it was important to alter the medium, use, and scale to allow people to interpret the table with a fresh perspective.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Its a great conversation piece! good or bad reaction, it always evokes a reaction.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in March 2016 in Seattle and finished in August 2016 in Seattle
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Furniture, Decorative Items and Homeware Design
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Ashtray_CT was created using a CNC router. It was laborious in creating the "Blank" to be cut with enough room to keep the router bit engaged throughout the process. Another obstacle that needed to be overcome was routing on both side of the blank. Typically while using a vacuum table one side is left flat to create a strong bond while the router follows its path.

The insights and impacts of Ashtray_CT is simply to reclaim an outdated product and breathe life into a beautiful shape. Our society is trained to interpret this shape in one way, as an ashtray… This table allows the opportunity to interpret it with a fresh perspective.
