Music Pillow

INSPIRATION:
We wish to help people to sleep better through the power of sound. Sound can convey emotions, and rhythm can affect mood and mind. Music has magic to cheer people up and calm people down as well. There are near 30 percent of people suffering from insomnia in the world. We know that sound can play a very important role to help people to sleep better. Nowadays many people listen to soft music to relax and to aid sleep using earphones, but they will have to face a terrible earache next morning. Meanwhile, we notice that although everyone sleeps with a pillow, pillows have not evolved for almost three hundred years. Most pillows on the market today still remain the same designs as three hundred years ago. We strongly believe that pillows need evolution very urgently. So we decided to design a pillow, which is different from any other pillows in this world, one can truly worth the time while people are with it. The members of our team are technology enthusiasts. We used anthropometry and ergonomics data to design its unique shape. Finally we got 52 surfaces! A pillow with 52 surfaces, fits all kinds of slumber patterns, and presents a unique style of low-poly design. We also provide sound content in our mobile app, including music made by indie musicians, field recording from all over the world as artificial soundscape. We want to provide immersive experience. Although people stay at home, they can still hear the high quality sound of ocean, high mountain, rain forest, etc. We want to provide people with inner peace using the power of nature sound, and ultimately create a healthy lifestyle.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Pilo redefines pillows in terms of shape and function. It has the shape of a rock but is soft like a feather. Pilo is codesigned by biomedical engineers and industrial designers. Its low-poly structure outlines a suitable curve for the head and neck. The curve design is based on ergonomics data and implemented with memory foam. The most graceful feature of Pilo is its built-in sound units. They are invisible and absolutely imperceptible. The units work without external power source. They create a gently whispering sound field, which is acoustically adjusted and of high quality. The accompanying mobile app PILO presents its users an unprecedented acoustic experience. It will make falling asleep easier and wake you up in the right moment in a natural way.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Pilo has 52 surfaces, you can choose your best spot according to your sleep position. Memory foam material can remember your sleep position and the weight of your head, consequently it will suit you better. Pilo has an audio cable. You can play music on it with any device with a 3.5 mm audio connection, such as cell phones, iPad, iPod, etc. In a professional audio studio, we made adjust to the loudspeakers inside of Pilo to make sure that you can hear music of high quality while sleeping on it. You can enjoy a private concert on it with no distractions at home. If you don’t sleep alone, do not worry, Pilo will not disturb people lying next to you. You can download our app named PILO on App Store. With the app, you can sleep with nature sound like the sound of ocean, forest, lake and fireplace. The power of nature will make it very easy to relax. You can also make phone calls with Pilo. When you connect your cell phone with it, the voice of your friend or family will come from Pilo and surround you, makes you feel they are talking next to your ears. Pilo does not need to charge. You can use extension cable to put your cell phone away so you can be in a completely undisturbed environment. In addition, the pillow case can be changed easily to be kept clean.

This project started in early 2016 in Shenzhen, China.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Pilo is codesigned by biomedical enigneers and industrial designers. It provides the most appropriate supporting height and pressure-relieving angle. Its low-poly structure outlines a suitable curve for the head and neck. The curve design is based on anthropometry and ergonomics data, and implemented with close-cell memory foam. The pillowcase is made of special blended fabric, which ensures an comfortable feeling on the skin. In summer it is refreshingly cool and in winter mildly warm. The loudspeakers embedded in Pilo need to be imperceptible. So a special type of soft silicone cover is designed and implanted in Pilo to protect them.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
We want to design a pillow which fits most kinds of sleeping gestures and slumber patterns, and meanwhile presents a unique style of low poly design. Luckily, We get help from a biomedical engineering laboratory from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The provide us with anthropometry and ergonomics statistical data of human head, neck and shoulder. We emerged these key points height with memory foam material, and implemented our design successfully at last.

CHALLENGE:
The biggest challenge is to creat a gently whispering sound field in the pillow, and make the sound of high quality. In the meantime, since the sound units are embedded in the pillow, we need to keep them invisible and absolutely imperceptible. A professional audio studio helps us to customize the sound units and adjust the sound field. A special silicon cover is implanted to protect the loudspeakers. Finally we make it more amazing than we expected.
