| DESIGN NAME: Cumulus PRIMARY FUNCTION: Convention centre INSPIRATION: Inspired by a field of pastel coloured pixels, the entire convention centre has been lined in high quality European acoustic fabric, to create a fresh and lively atmosphere. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A fresh and energetic convention centre designed to seat 150 people, can be accessed from the welcoming reception for seminars and high resolution screening using the full width LED display screen. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This same colour pattern is utilised for the tiered auditorium seating. Moveable, flexible and stackable chairs are located to the front of the tired seating to provide additional seating if necessary. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: High performance acoustic panels, wrapped with luxurious fabrics by Kvadrat, were custom made to line the interior of the convention centre, with different hues of blue creating dynamic patterns. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: This creates an aesthetic environment with excellent acoustic properties, promoting both productivity and wellbeing. The walls are washed with a soft light, emphasizing the textural quality of the fabric. TAGS: architecture, interior, acoustic, auditorium, fabric, kvadrat, Bean Buro, Kerry Logistics RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The project explores a new method of creating hospitality values in a corporate organization, one that is not corporate, formal and strict, but on the contrary to create a friendly, welcoming aesthetic using high quality, luxurious materials. Lighting and acoustic elements were the main driving force of the design process, translated into a coherent palette of acoustic fabrics that are artificially lit to create a skylight effect. CHALLENGE: The challenge is to create a clear sense of direction and hierarchy of presenter and audience relationship, without creating a formal and strict atmosphere. The creative solution is a gridded arrangement of seats and wall panels that creates a sense of order, but allowing a random colour pattern to inject playfulness. The stage area has a clear geometry in a darker colour, in sharp contrast with the audience space. NAME: Bean Buro PROFILE: The studio is an emerging architecture and interiors practice from London and Paris, led by Lorène Faure and Kenny Kinugasa-Tsui, with a team of international designers to provide architecture, interior, installation, furniture, product and masterplanning design services. The Hong Kong studio was opened in 2013. The diversity of the practice with its collaborators reinforces a core vision for the practice: to respond to the exchanges of global cultural narratives, incorporating overlapping design disciplines specializing in the social, economical and political production of urban spaces. We believe architecture is an emotional, spatial experience produced by both the user and the author. Our design methodologies stem from the observation, speculation and analysis of contextual narratives. These narratives, or ‘stories’, generate dynamic exchanges of historical, environmental, cultural and social factors, resulting in highly inventive interventions while preserving plenty of intellectual wit. COLLABean, as an integrated part of Bean Buro, is a trans-disciplinary platform for collaborations between practice, research and academia. COLLABean can provide design research services for business organisations, and wherever appropriate, to involve specialists’ input from a network of highly reputable designers, academicians and researchers in the design field. The practice has since produced a string of successful interior architecture projects for luxury residential clients as well as workplace designs for reputable companies such as Cheil, Leo Burnett, Warner Music, and has been awarded Silver Winner in the Asia Pacific Interior Design Award 2015, Runner Up in Architizer A+ Awards 2015, Gold, Silver & Bronze Winner in the A’ Design Awards, and Finalist Winner of the 13th Modern Decoration International Media Award. The studio has a rigorous methodology of exploring spatial narratives through conceptual drawings and models that explore the humanistic aspects of design, and has been featured on Archdaily, Elle Decor and Wallpaper* Magazine. |
