| DESIGN NAME: Cascading Garden PRIMARY FUNCTION: Planter INSPIRATION: The cascading Garden is designed for limited space gardening. Whether you have a small backyard, a deck, a porch, or just a balcony you can still enjoy growing your own fresh herbs, vegetables and flowers. Designed with the future in mind: We only use 100% sustainably grown untreated Western Red Cedar. We use "rescued" pieces of milled cedar wood. Normally these odd-length pieces are scrapped. However, we collect these remnants, glues them together and crafts beautifully functional garden planters. Why does Rescue wood matter? Because no new trees are specifically harvested to produce this planter. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Planter has three tiers of gardening space, allowing for a variety of plants while the vertical design maximizes space. No tools or hardware required for assembly, special cuts allow the various components to slide and interlock. Planters use 100% "rescued" cedar wood. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Developing this design we had three requirements to attain: Make a beautiful, functional, and sustainable planter Part of the functionality is to make assembly quick, easy, and tool free. This was attained by utilizing a variety of specific wood cuts and peg & hole assembly. We also increased the functionality by going vertical. Elevating each garden tier allows for greater gardening space while minimizing the footprint. The elevated design and lack of screws or nails lent itself to increasing the beauty of the design. Making the planter sustainable is the most significant technological advancement. Each individual rescued Western Red Cedar fiber piece is about 5cm wide, by 24cm long. These small pieces are then finger jointed and edged glued to make wood panels that are 24 cm wide and 4.6 meter long.
