DESIGN NAME: Riviera Palm Springs
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Hospitality Public Spaces
INSPIRATION: Dating back to the 1960s, The Riviera is one of Palm Springs most storied hotels, having most recently boasted a 1970s glam aesthetic. Rose Ink Workshop reimagined the space to jive with contemporary Palm Springs, creating a bohemian getaway that was stylish, eclectic, and cool. Inspired by the easy glamour of Slim Aaron's photographs, the new design emphasizes mid-century styles & vibrant playful colors with a sprinkling of retro nostalgia. We wanted to modernize the interiors, yet keep a bit of whimsy in the public areas to tie the hotel's past and present together.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: We took a storied, glamorous hotel and reimagined the space to coincide with modern-day Palm Springs. Public spaces including the lobby, an arcade of eclectic living rooms, and three restaurants were given colorful & radiant face-lifts. Our art collection sets a fun, happy, and irreverent tone throughout all spaces, and helps tie the property together with inspiration ranging from desert landscapes to retro color palates.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: We reconfigured the reception and lobby are to create living rooms that are near the lobby lounge. This gives guests lots of comfortable places to relax and have a drink. We also updated the luggage corridor with fun design elements to bring it to a front of house experience.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: First built in the 1960's, the current renovation started in December 2015 and finished in November 2016.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We looked at Palm Springs Design History and other local hotels and their styles.
CHALLENGE: The hardest but also most rewarding part of the project was sourcing local art. We wanted to bring the spirit of Palm Springs into the design so we looked for key artworks in local galleries.
