DESIGN NAME: Mr. Pip's Double Cross
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Game Decor
INSPIRATION: Technology has enabled global connectivity, while simultaneously creating a need for products that invite face-to-face social interaction. Mr. Pip's Double Cross is a game designed to draw people from their devices; sparking personal connection, play, and fun. Historically, most tabletop games have received little design attention, and are typically hidden away in boxes. Mr. Pip's Double Cross was designed to be a beautiful modern game that players prefer to leave out, serving as a reminder to incorporate play into our daily lives.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Mr. Pip’s Double Cross brings form into the function of Liar’s Dice, a game prevalent in Asia that is so simple it transcends language and culture. When not in use, the parts collectively form a modern object meant to be left out as decor. The form is made up from 6 cups which come together around a central hub that contains 30 dice. Made for 2-6 players, the game transcends cultural differences and language barriers to connect people from all backgrounds.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Turn the decor object into a game by removing the 6 cups and 30 dice from the hub. Each player gets one cup and five dice to start the game. This new take on Liar's Dice is a clever, fast, and crazy party game that will leave everyone guessing and laughing. When not in use, the game reassembles into a beautiful and intriguing tabletop centerpiece.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in March 2016 in Los Angeles and introduced to the market in December 2016.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Well versed in the world of technology, we wanted to design a game that would reconnect friends and multi-generational families the old fashion way: through face to face game play. With that mission in mind, we scrupulously researched methods that would invite users to play. This resulted in our finding that while table games may bring people and families together, they are often unattractive and must be hidden away, easily forgotten for more reachable technology. Classic games have been a long-time tradition for social interaction, but they have never been so sophisticated or user-conscious.
CHALLENGE: The key challenge to the product was to create a product which improved upon the game, while the components worked together to form a beautiful object that would encourage people to leave the product out and play the game.
