| DESIGN NAME: Gull Wing PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bench INSPIRATION: "Gull wing" is inspired by gliding sea gulls, which has been widely considered as a symbol of balance, continuity and motion in harmony. Its name is derived from seabird it resembles. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Public places and parks can also be called as nests of numerous bird spieces-that are main inhabitants of green areas at urban spaces. The bench has been designed with an objective for premium "look and feel" product for everybody. The Gull wing bench has a clean reduced design language, which expresses its abstracted timeless identity. "X" crossing point in the middle emphasizes its self-stabilising structure and its design identity. The main philosophy of the Gull wing bench is to offer ultimate high quality and humane architecture at public and urban places such as parks and exhibition halls. The honesty of the design can be seen by its explaining crossed structure and carefully chosen natural and sustainable material combinations such as wood and metal. The Gull wing bench requires neither high technology production equipment nor high production costs. Absolutely, simple in form, simple in production, yet premium. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Gull wing is functional. Despite its' dual-body structure, it gives the impression that it is a one-piece single unit. Gull wings bench is suitable for indoor and outdoor application purposes. In particular, for short time seating, the Gull wing can also be preferred by exhibition halls and museums. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The Project was begun in October and completed in Jaunary 2017, Ankara, Turkey. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: A simple manufacturing technology, utilizing welding technics, chrome plated box profiles and local wood will be used. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Material: Box profile and wood Height: 41cm Depth: 45cm Width: 160cm TAGS: Gull wing bench, bench, street furniture, exhibition hall furniture RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Visual and therotical research was conducted and within this context public places such as parks, museums, exhibition halls were visited to build a better emphaty in the creation phase. Furthermore, sea gulls were the focal point of the inspiration of the design morphology. CHALLENGE: It is a single, simple free standing unit and can be manufactured in any low-tech workshop. Interior Designer and instructor at the Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, University of Atilim, Ankara, Turkey. Bilge Demirci is a Munich, Germany based Industrial Designer. He obtained his bachelor and master degrees at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. He held lectureships at several universities in the field of Industrial Design in Turkey. |
