DESIGN NAME: DND
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Mosquito Repellent
INSPIRATION: The packaging concept is inspired by its name, DND, that is 'Do Not Disturb', communicating total privacy to enjoy one's personal space free from mosquitos. For the repellent's refill bottle packaging, we designed a unique box that allows for part of it to transform into a detachable Do Not Disturb sign, that can be used by customers around their home. The 'D' logo is inspired by keyholes which suggests privacy. It becomes a functional element serving as a box hook & part of the detachable hanger.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: DND is a new brand of innovative mosquito repellent products in India. We developed the identity & packaging from the brand's inception. For their fastest selling product, we focused on its packaging communicating the brand's innovative personality. The logo, (inspired by keyholes referring to Do-Not-Disturb) transforms itself into a functional element for the packaging, acting as a hook for the boxes to be displayed as well as a detachable sign for customers to hang in their homes.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: When the box is opened, the hook can be pulled out becoming a Do Not Disturb hanger. 2 perforated side flaps on each side of the hanger are indicated to be torn away. What is left is a standard box without the hook, as well as the detached hook which is now a separate piece namely a Do-Not-Disturb hanger. The 'D' logo acts as a hook for the box to be hung from in retail displays as well as a detachable hanger for customers to hang on their room door knobs.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was based in Mumbai, India and started in January 2016 and finishing in May 2016.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Exploratory research was done as well as client market research was gained. The aim was to gain insight on millennial behaviour in the household insecticide sector. A qualitative methodology was used through client alignment meetings that shared focus group insights on millennial brand attitudes in this sector. The findings suggest that consumer brand loyalty is swayed by innovations in this sector. The focus was to create packaging that excites the consumer about the brand's innovative range.
CHALLENGE: The challenge was to ensure the construction of the box allowed for the 'D' logo to suspend the box from a hook in retail shelves as well as be easily detachable for consumers to use a separate Do Not Disturb hanger as a keepsake in their homes. Production possibilities in terms of paper gsm thickness and materials were explored and prototypes were made with varying materials to realise the vision & feasibility of the design concept.
