DESIGN NAME: Yana's Ring
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Wedding Band
INSPIRATION: After scouring the market for a suitable engagement ring and wedding band set, and not finding anything extraordinary, I set out to design a beautiful set of rings and have then made in Canada.
The material choice was important for the tension setting and the challenge came when sourcing a jewelry manufacturer with the right level of expertise in machining Ti-6Vl-4V grade titanium.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A titanium tension setting was modelled in 3D CAD and machined using a multi-axis CNC milling centre to produce a two ring set that unite together when worn on the finger. The design also allows for either of the rings to be worn separately if so desired.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: When putting on the ring set, the two rings need to be nested prior to slipping the ring onto the finger. The middle wedding band will not fall from the set, nor will it fall from the finger when worn alone, despite the space at the top.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The ring project took several weeks of design and development, along with a few additional weeks to source a competent manufacturer.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Modelled in 3D CAD using SolidWorks, machined out of Ti-6Vl-4V, with a Black Diamond Coating finish on the engagement ring. The sparkle and shine come from ethically sourced Moissanite stones.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Overall dimensions are 20.7mm x 9.5mm x 22.5mm
Weight: 7g

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The main area of research revolved around the properties of metal that would allow for a tension set stone, as the traditional precious metals do not allow for this type of stone setting. Titanium however is much more difficult than silver or gold to form.
CHALLENGE: The properties of titanium are perfect for a tension setting, however the challenge is working the material. Thus, finding a reputable supplier, with the background and experience to transform my design into a tangible ring was the biggest challenge.
