| DESIGN NAME: Stems CT 03 PRIMARY FUNCTION: Coffee Table INSPIRATION: The inspiration for Stems_CT_03 is based on the observation of trees primarily, coupled with the idea of how trees repopulate from seeds. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Stems_CT_03 is inspired by stems, leaves and seed pods that hang from trees. The structural tubing or “stems” act as the foundational base of the piece, and is the vehicle for the design. The stems are a bit unpredictable as they rise above the table surface and add another dimension to the piece. The Table surfaces “seed pods “are designed to be a trilogy of ovals randomly overlapping in a dominate, sub-dominate and subordinate layout. Stems_CT_03 is a whimsical look at tree pods and stem OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: - PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Stems_CT started in May2016 in Seattle and finished in July 2016 in Seattle. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The materials and technology for this design was fairly straight forward; bamboo sheet stock and bent tubing. The frame went through a few iterations due to support brackets to support the plane. The initial material used was a thin gauge and did not provide the proper strength. Once the gauge of the material was thickened the problem was solved. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 710mm x Depth 915mm x Height 500mm TAGS: Stems_CT, Day-Studios, Furniture, Contemporary Furniture, Product Design, Seattle RESEARCH ABSTRACT: - CHALLENGE: The most challenging aspect of the design was to visually convey the idea of seeds taking root and growing.
