DESIGN NAME: Joss - Stain Repellent
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Water-Repellent & Oil-Resistant T-Shirt
INSPIRATION: Inspiration came from the urge to improve a real life need from a designer’s mind: can a shirt with exquisite material be swanky, easy handling, long lasting and comfortable? Can we give haute couture a transformation into household? Fascinated by the idea to coordinate across design creation and material development -fusing the timeless topics of love, life and death with nanotech, resulted an unconventional interdisciplinary sense of intricacy while offering protection from spills and stains.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Joss is a t-shirt line that endeavors to uniquely create design and material simultaneously to convey an interdisciplinary artifact of intricacy. It embraces the eternal topics of love, life and death with our nanotech fabric NanoJ. Its water-repellent and oil-resistant property is realized through a unique manipulation to orderly attach nano particles on fabric’s fiber - more durable and comfortable, versus other water-repellent fabrics that nano particles are “cross-linked” without order.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Joss serves as a great everyday T-shirt while providing options in design and offering protection from spills and stains at the same time. An intrinsic wearing experience is conveyed to consumers through fabric’s outstanding quality in water-repellence and oil-resistance and apparel’s graphic design. It’s an unstainable everyday T-shirt that makes your day delightful.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started on August 2016 in Boston and finished on Feb 2017.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Illustration design and material design happened simultaneously. Then fabric was manufactured from a selected mill with capacity to work with nano technology. NanoJ was produced at nanoscale, where the nanoparticles formed fluoropolymer chains and permanently attached to the cotton fiber; this resulted a new fabric more durable and comfortable than other water repellent materials under “cross-link” attachment. After the fabric was produced, T-shirt patterning and printing followed.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Researched on illustration concepts, supply market and different specs that effect properties of fabric to develop a t-shirt line intrinsic to wear while offering protection from spills and stains. Researched on nano-technology and experimented with our vendor to apply it on fabric. Had extensive discussion and experiments to reach satisfactory durability and comfort. Participants are: designers, chemistry team, cotton mill fabrication team and quality control team.
CHALLENGE: The most challenging but also fun aspect was during the process of fabric development, to find the appropriate chemical lab and fabric mill to accept the challenge and to collaborate together with us, as from a historical perspective most cotton mills are old-fashioned while chemical labs are scientific minds, with us a team of designers trying to do the management.
