INSPIRATION: The inspiration for the project came from console video games, specifically simulation games for racing and our combined passion for engineering. The visual quality in real time imagery has increased so much over the past years that it motivated us to try and simulate it within the browsers, having studied the latest advances in WebGL and OpenGL for a decade.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Car Visualizer Classics interactively presents a selection of classic vehicles produced in the 1960s. The users have the possibility to explore the vehicles in real-time, from all the angles, in any modern browser and device. Retro electronic music, exclusively designed for the project accompanies the experience. The user can switch between vehicles and change the paint color as well. The environment invites the viewer to focus on the vehicle while giving the a sense of an infinite space.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The project was developed having in mind that many users will find unusual to interact with 3D objects in a browser. We created a simple graphical user interface to control the 3D world. The panel is located in the right side of the window and allows the user to replace vehicles, paint color, toggle camera mode, control audio, among other functionalities.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was initially started in October 2013 and was finished in February 2014. It got an update in technology and visuals in January 2017 using the latest updates in technology and research in our side.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The project uses WebGL technology and it was fully developed using JavaScript and GLSL. The 3D models of the environment and the vehicles were created in a 3D modeling software and optimized. Textures were created and painted for achieving the desired realistic result. The PBR (Physically Based Rendering) patterns were implemented in the update of the project.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The project uses cutting-edge technology and runs in any modern browser on computer (desktop and laptops), as well as in modern smartphones/tablets browsers.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The main focus of the project was to blend two different areas: the video game and the Web industries, in the context of improving the advertising of products online and receive better user feedback. The focus has been in achieving visual fidelity and best performance in as many devices as possible. With the adoption of real-time solutions, the user experience benefits the most because the interactive possibilities expand while the data consumption minimizes.
CHALLENGE: The main challenge has been to create the most realistic visual results and reach as many devices as possible. In the first approach we encountered multiple issues regarding the assets load, size and memory consumption in a wide variety of devices. We took into consideration the advances we made in our studies and simplified the options of the user to keep the memory consumption low while being able to keep flawlessly the animations of the 3D world and HUD combined.
