DESIGN NAME: Brake valve checking workstation
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Workstation
INSPIRATION: The design was made as my Diploma graduation project from the University and intended for needs of Russian Railways design-construction design office. Inspiration for the design came from technologies can be seen in future- and space-themed computer games, movies in case to make an object logically structured according to the work process, aesthetic principles and ergonomics to reach harmony and unity of every detail and the whole composition.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Workstation is totally redesigned device which is destined for drivers brake valves checking. Brake valve is a complicated valve system for controlling compressed air brake of a railway vehicle. The Workstation includes following parts: workplace, electro-pneumatic devices box stand, part for reservoirs with compressed air, part for brake valve controller, command circuit interrupter and manual control valve and connecting modules.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: First time when using Workstation parts are connected together via connecting modules according to the needs and area as compact as necessary. Brake valve tested parts (command circuit interrupter, brake valve controller, manual control valve and electro-pneumatic devices box) are settled in the designated locations on each Workstation part. Operator sits at his workplace, runs special program and test starts. After all test results can be printed (there is a place for printer prescribed).
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2016 in Moscow and finished in May 2016, and was exhibited at Stroganov Moscow State University of Arts and Industry and then at Russian Railways design-construction design office in June 2016.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Firstly I analyzed an prototype, which was drivers brake valves checking stand, studied how it worked; then a research paper was written. After that I analyzed plastic analogues and searched for inspiring designs, made sketches to find out the form of the product and small workstation models with human operator models to check it for ergonomics, then it was modeled using Autodesk 3ds Max and visualized via KeyShot, and a scaled model was made.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Height of the biggest part(part for reservoirs with compressed air) is about 1610 mm. Width of the whole system connected together in line is about 3700 mm. But as there are more than 5 variants of Workstation parts arrangement via connecting modules according to the needs and area, it can be much more compact.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Research included information collection about prototype such as operational manual, draughts, photos, etc., consulting with Russian Railways design office product engineers, that let to come to conclusion how prototype can be redesigned. Outputs were described at 100-page article to sum up all data and continue research sketching and making scale models to find the whole form and object parts nuances. That let gain aim and design unique device with many advantages and new extra functions.
CHALLENGE: The whole task became a real challenge: from understanding how prototype works and studying its inner assembly in case to think over the construction of my design to making Workstation comfortable to use, fully regulated with adjustable parts i.e. ergonomic and with that good-looking.
