DESIGN NAME: y.o2 Zmart
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Convertible Chair
INSPIRATION: The convertible chair design, y.O, started with inspiration from early 20th century furniture designs and working early in my career in the office of Marcel Breuer, the last practicing master from the Bauhaus. The Wassily Chair and Corbusier’s Sling chair were inspiring examples of good design. This experience along with living in small urban living spaces in New York City, emerging global urbanization and a desire to contribute in new ways to manage resources combined to inspire this design.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Chair has the unique ability to convert from a reclining position to an upright dining position in one motion without latches or hardware using only proportion, geometry and gravity while remaining in one piece as one object using interchangeable snap-in cushion pads. The thru-slots allow color to show through to the back of the chair as well as the front in both positions, are easily removable to clean or change color and are made from recyclable, TPE material.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Chair has the unique ability to convert from a reclining position to an upright dining position in one motion without latches or hardware using only proportion, geometry and gravity while remaining in one piece as one object.
The Cushion uses the structure of the chair to provide secure & easily removable cushion pads in various colors for design coordination and cleaing.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
All dimensions and ergonomic data from Human Scale 1 2 3 by Neils Diffrient, Alvin Tilley & Joan Bardagly
CHALLENGE: CHALLENGE:
CHAIR: First, the seat dimensions have to respond to both the dining position and the lounge position upon rotation. Secondly, locating the pivot point in the support piece affects both the dinning seat height and the lounge seat height from the floor in different proportionality. Thirdly, only and unless the position of the seat pivot point is high enough relative to the occupant’s hips does balance and stability occur. And lastly, there is the aesthetic challenge. The chair must look normal in both positions not odd, quirky, unbalanced or unattractive.
CUSHION : The challenge in creating a cushion for the y.O2 ZmartChair was to find the right material and attachment method that would complement the clean subtractive design of the chair structure. Various prototypes in various material were tested. In the end the strips cut into the seat back and bottom for saving weight and to provide flexibility also provided the opportunity to be able to easily insert different cushion pads of different colors.
