DESIGN NAME: Quantum
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Full electric future limousine
INSPIRATION: To reinterpret the luxury limousine we drew on a wide range of inspirations which influenced us in both aesthetics and function. We drew on trends in a variety of fields, from the science of biometrics to the cutting edge of furniture design, working hard to apply our findings to the project. Despite our motivation to look to the future, we also considered heritage and in particular racecars which provided us with strong inspiration from the past.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Quantum is a bold vision for the future of limousines based around theme of composition. Fluid, essential and adaptable, it strives to strike a balance luxurious quality and sporty dynamism. Quantum was inspired simultaneously by historical vehicles and future technologies, as evidenced by its construction, featuring a technical lower section with magnetically suspended omni wheels, topped by an inviting passenger cell which houses a contrasting and adaptable interior. Energy. Defined. Composition. Welcome to Quantum!
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Using biometrics to recognise its users, the Quantum adapts to their preferences as they approach. Traditional driving and full autonomy are both catered for, as the interior adapts from a 2+2 to a sporty 1+2+1 diamond layout, prioritising the driver while offering passengers unparalleled legroom. On the road, Quantum has unprecedented manoeuvrability thanks to its omni wheels, while passengers are treated to an interactive augmented reality experience in a simple, modern and luxurious space.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in March 2015 and finished in November 2015 in Milano, Italy.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Vehicle, Mobility and Transportation Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Quantum houses an electric drivetrain in its composite chassis. This powers orbital motors which turn magnetically suspended omni wheels. Above, the passenger cell is manufactured from lightweight aluminium, while lighting is provided by a combination of OLED screens and LED clusters. Inside, recycled newspaper wood replaces traditional plastic mouldings, while the seats are constructed from a flexible 3D printed foam. Information and entertainment is provided by a plethora of OLED displays.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Maximum Width 2100mm, Overall Length 5100mm, Car Height 1350mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This research formed the basis of our project. The objective was to propose a vision of the future of limousines. The project had two parts -a short individual research followed by the team phase. Extensive sketch ideation was verified using CAD software and automotive clay. Quantum is a vision of how a large car will integrate with the future city and the management of transition between user and autonomous driving.
CHALLENGE: We went to great lengths to justify some of our technical decisions, in particular the chassis structure and omni wheel setup. It took a large amount of research to develop convincing proof of the solution's feasibility, as it is an unconventional arrangement which to our knowledge hadn't been used in an automotive application before. Justifying the wheels however gave us much greater creative freedom for the rest of the vehicle, and ensures great usability in crowded urban environments.
