DESIGN NAME: Under Pressure
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Simulation Training Program
INSPIRATION: In a country struck by at least 19 typhoons a year, journalists are at the frontlines of disaster reporting. Under Pressure is a training program designed to prepare journalists with the right mindset in a natural disaster or crisis situation, before they are deployed for coverage.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Under Pressure is a simulation training program for journalists that tests their reportage and decision-making skill in the face of a crisis situation. It provides modules with scenarios based on actual natural disasters and emergencies that happened in the Philippines. A series of tasks needs to be completed, after which there are videos and modules that supplement the training.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The program will be made available to local journalists via personalized accounts they can use to access the first phase website. Users can save their progress along the way, allowing for flexibility given journalists busy schedules. For ease of use, the backend development of the website will allow for quick and easy media loading.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project won first place in the Global Editors Network hackathon in July 2016. The project proponents will compete at the GEN Final at Vienna, Austria in June 2017. The project is currently under development and will be launched in time for the Vienna finals.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The website is designed both for functionality and interactivity. Users are asked to choose from among several modules, with tasks to be completed. The modules also have video lectures and tips from veteran journalists. Tasks will have options to choose from, providing a choose your own adventure game-like experience.
The second phase is a rendering of the training module in augmented and virtual reality technologies to take interactivity to the next level.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The first phase is a responsive design website that fits any screen size and format. Video backgrounds for the website serve not only as a key design highlight but also provide visual context for the training modules.
The second phase is an adaptation of the program for augmented and virtual reality technology. Users will perform tasks using AR and VR technology, allowing them to immerse themselves in the actual disaster or emergency scenario.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Under Pressure is a training product for crisis reporting. It is a simulation tool for journalists, immersing them in situations that test their reportage and decision-making skills. The first phase is a website with training modules from actual crisis scenarios, with tasks to sharpen their skills. The second phase is the program in AR and VR technology, heightening the immersive experience. The project won first place, and its proponents will represent the country in the GEN final in Austria.
CHALLENGE: One of the challenges was to use the website design to aid in interactivity. Since a training module is only as effective as it is used by the intended audience, its interface had to be designed so that it is equal parts engaging and informative.
The website programming also had to be carefully planned out. The site is meant to host a lot of media (images, videos) and from the backend development, it had to be put together so that it provides a quick and seamless user experience.
