DESIGN NAME: DS8100 Series
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Handheld Imager
INSPIRATION: In retail, the checkout experience is crucial to the shopper’s lasting impression. The quality of the checkout experience is heavily dependent upon the performance of the scanner. There is a need for a high performance, cordless scanner that could capture virtually any barcode reliably, whilst also being able to be docked in, either a low profile cradle or a cradle with the ability to have hands-free mode. Healthcare also required a similar device, with the additional requirements specific to the Healthcare market importantly features that reduce the spread of bacteria.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The high performance corded and cordless device with its’ superior scan range and PRZM technology has the ability to read virtually any barcode. It can capture damaged or misprinted barcodes, multiple barcodes simultaneously and has full page document capture. The smart battery has the power to scan continuously for 24 hours, has at-a-glance battery level indication and is removable without tools for easy serviceability.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Two cradles were designed allowing for simple insertion/removal and can sit on desktops, or be mounted to walls or mobile workstations. Pairing of device occurs automatically upon insertion. Miss-placed devices are easily found using the pager button. The healthcare presentation cradle has a magnet to increase security when used on mobile workstation. The healthcare device has a softer green aimer and white illumination for use around patients. It can also act as a task light in patients’ rooms.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2015 and was launched in November 2016

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: -
CHALLENGE: There was a creative challenge in creating a series of devices that had shared core elements and cradles, but were also able to be developed into specific SKUs for the different markets. This included creating corded and cordless version of these SKUs and creating a platform for other devices in the scanner portfolio.
