DESIGN NAME: Above the Clouds
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Website
INSPIRATION: The Earth is the true inspiration for this project. The project was created as a tribute to Earth. Besides that, Carl Sagan's book "Pale Blue Dot", has also been an inspiration, from which a quote was also included in the project. Another powerful source of inspiration was the "Cosmos, A Space Odyssey" TV series, 2014 edition, in which the CG graphics of Earth and space were beautiful. After watching the episodes, we decided to try and simulate something like that in the browser and make it interactive and easily accessible by any type of user.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Above the Clouds is a real time interactive cinematic experience, created for the modern browsers, where viewers are taken through a mesmerizing journey around the Earth, from far and closer angles, listening to music specifically composed for this purpose, and reading a quote from Carl Sagan's "Pale Blue Dot" book. The purpose of the project is to stop for a few minutes from our hectic daily lives and appreciate the Earth in all its sublimeness, from angles we seldom see.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The project can be experienced without any user input if desired, or by using the mouse to look around, from more angles. The viewer can also toggle between the animation mode and full interaction mode, using the menu buttons, where he/she can look and take screenshots of Earth from different angles.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in Bremen in November 2014 and was finished in April 2015, launched on Earth Day. It received an update in technology and graphics in January 2017.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The project uses WebGL technology and it was fully developed using JavaScript and GLSL. The 3D models were created and optimized, and different textures were created for achieving the desired realistic result.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The project uses cutting-edge technology and runs in any modern browser on computer (desktop and laptops), as well as in modern smartphones/tablets browsers.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The project's research was mostly focused on the technical, artistic and interactivity areas. Human Computer Interaction tests were made before its development, with the aim to identify the simplest and most intuitive interactive patterns, knowing that on the Web, users are not as used to interact with 3D interfaces and objects.
The most challenging part has been to integrate two different systems, the Web and Video Games models for imagery creation.
The impact we strive with the project is to make people aware of the uniqueness of Earth, that we should all treasure it and protect it.
CHALLENGE: The challenges in this project were mainly achieving the best visual results of the Earth using the WebGL technology. Due to limitations in different hardware and devices, we had to find a common ground in using elements that would render in most of them, since the goal is for as many people as possible to be able to access the project. Creating the shaders of the Earth, the specific glows and the sun brought new challenges that we did overcome. There are items on our list that will be added to the project with the next update.
