PRIMARY FUNCTION: Earphones for Best Comfort
INSPIRATION: Earphones currently in the market either do not fit perfectly in the ears or do not stay comfortable in the ears for a long period. We designed a new way of wearing earphones that provides the perfect balance of comfort, size and convenience. Every human ear is different but we share a similar region that is shaped in the form of a bean. That inspired us to design earBeans: a light-weight, small size, and two-way wearing earphones designed to provide the best comfort and convenience to every user.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Weighing just 2.3g compared to 5.3g from those currently in the market, earBeans is the smallest and lightest earphones for best comfort. So small and comfortable, they become part of you. Its bean shape is designed to fit all ears and offers two ways of wearing to suit everyone's preferences and creates various sound optimizations. Its integrated micro speakers are special medical grade speakers used in the hearing aids industry, which provides a clear and delicate sound quality.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Simply put the earBeans in your ears, there are no left or right sides as one size fits all. By putting the earBeans in your ear in different ways, you create various sound optimizations. You can place it at an angle that allows the earBean to go deeper inside your ear. Alternatively, you can place it at an angle that sits just right inside your ear.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in 2016 in Shanghai, China and is currently in progress.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Thorough researched led to the realization that the special medical grade speakers used in the hearing aids industry, and also by American astronauts during the first moon landing for crystal clear communication, could help improve earphone quality in the market.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: From the very beginning, we already set a very clear goal. We strived to create a very small and light-weight headphone that is comfortable to wear wherever you go. We went to a crowded subway and observed commuters. We analyzed and compared ears of different people, seeking to find a shared common feature. When we found out that each ear channel appears to share a half-curved bean-like shape, we were inspired to use this as a starting point.
CHALLENGE: The biggest difficulty we encountered was how to make the headphone small enough for it to stay inside the ear and not fall out, while ensuring that one size fits all. We used white clay to mold different shapes and sizes of the headphone. Then we tested different moldings on a sample of people. With their feedback on its comfort and usability, we continuously tweaked the shape, making several molding adjustments that ultimately resulted in the current shape of EarBeans.
